Zahra's Studio profiled in POJO

Kathleen Murray spoke with Keith Zahra, about his tattoo/piercing studio and art gallery, Zahra's Studio. The article appeared in Sunday March 26's Poughkeepsie Journal.

I missed his last exhibit of work by Steven Cerio, but the exhibit prior to that, Teratogeny, by Tanya Kukucka was both unsettling and beautiful. The upcoming exhibit, "Paint Noir", with work by Michael D'Antuono opens this coming weekend, with the reception being held on April 8th.

Zahra's place adds an essential dimension to what's going on creatively in Beacon. His exhibits are often raw and surprising, and the atmosphere is strickly stick-up-the-ass-free.

BAU in NYTimes Westchester section

Today's Westchester section of the Times includes a story regarding artist run galleries and spaces throughout the region. BAU - Beacon Artist Union is represented by an interview with Harald Plochberger, and an image of most of the bau members standing in front of the gallery.

If you are interested, and have not seen it, I imagine that it will soon be posted on the bau website.

Kiesendahl + Cahoun Gallery set to close

It seems all but certain that Kiesendahl + Calhoun will be closing after its current exhibit closes next month. The gallery closing is the focus of Kathleen Murray's column in the March 17th Enjoy section.

This development brings up a lot of interesting issues in regard to what's happening in Beacon, all of which I'm interested in looking at in the coming months.

I've been asked, and have asked others what kind of impact this closure will have on Beacon. On the surface, and in terms of the visible perception of Beacon as a thriving art community, it is a bit of a blow, particularly when added to the closing of LoRiver Art Gallery last fall, and the more recent disintegration of Collaborative Concepts. However, if relative success or failure is based on keeping score, then with the opening of the Firehouse Gallery, Beacon Exposures, and the development of Wild Wood Gallery, and even the opening of Morphicism, the number of artspaces in Beacon is about unchanged from this time last year. But certainly not all galleries, or spaces are created equal, nor is there equality in the impact that these spaces may have on the local creative community on a deeper level.

The unique quality of K+C Gallery is that they draw heavily on their base of contacts from Westchester, and this has provided the potential for drawing a new audience into Beacon. The gallery participated in last year's Windows on Main St, and it collaborated with the Rivers and estuaries Center on the Thomas Locke exhibition and I know the owners have been active in BACA. If you ask me about the impact that the gallery closing and how it will effect Beacon, I have to say I don't think it will have much of an effect in the long run. Kiesendahl + Calhoun have been active in the community, but it just had not become fully integrated into the consciousness of the art culture in town. That the gallery has been open a relatively short time, and the fact that Keisendahl and Calhoun are both in Beacon part time are contribute to lessening the impact that the closing will have on the broader scene. Of course you never want to lose an art space, but there will continue to be waves of openings and closings that will mark the ebb and flow of development of Beacon's art community

The Living Artists of Beacon Directory

If you live in Beacon, you've probably seen the flyers or received the emails seeking submissions for "The Living Artists of Beacon Directory." The directory is an endeavor of artist, writer and art therapist, Mia Barkan Clarke. Mia moved to Beacon in 2005 with her family for the same reasons many others have recently: convenient proximity to Manhattan, the beautiful surroundings, and an atmosphere that is conducive to the process of creating art.
Mia feels it's important to organize and compile a list of the creative force in Beacon to promote and support the work of the individual artists in town. She sees the directory as a valuable guide for collectors, interior designers and others looking for art, and believes it will further distinguish Beacon as an art destination with an abundant source of talent. Mia estimates the number artists living or working in Beacon to be around 150 and response by artists wanting to be included in the first edition has been good. The inclusion in the directory is free, and open to individuals working in all disciplines: fine and applied arts, music, dance, theater, design, etc.

Each artist's entry will include contact info, details on the artist's work, and a 50 word statement by the artist. Deadline for submissions is March 31, 2006. The online submission form can be found at www.miaart.com
(I'm currently writing on a mac, and cannot hyperlink to mia's site, right now.)

I will ask Mia if inclusion to the Directory will also be open to the one dead artist that has a studio at Bulldog.

Rundown of the Week

So Second Saturday passed by again yesterday. We held our open studio at Spire, and I was not able to make it out to any other venues. If anyone has images from the evening. feel free to send them on.

As my schedule has been rather full over the last couple of weeks, I was not able to post information that was passed on to me and almost passed by me, So here is a quick review of items from the last week.

The Poughkeepsie Journal's March 3rd Enjoy section featured an article on the "Women Artists of Beacon" exhibit currently on view through March 26 at the Howland Cultural Center. The exhibit includes work of various media by over 20 female artists working in Beacon.

That same issue of Enjoy featured a profile of Deborah Bailey Browne, and the "Curated Office" event that was held at her office on March 3. I have added a couple of images from the office here, with more to come soon. The exhibit includes work by Alexis Elton, Matt Kinney, Marnie Hillsley and myself. The response by visitors that night was really gratifying and I think the intent of this series of events has been successful: to exhibit contemporary art, some of it rather challenging, in a context of a familiar, living environment where it may engender a greater level of appreciation from a new audience.

The WAW Gallery at Westchester Community College in Peekskill is currently hosting an exhibit of Beacon artist and gallerist, Carl VanBrunt's digital paintings through April 15.

If you're heading going down to Peekskill, stop in the Division St Grill, 26 N. Division St., where currently have work on display.

The cover of this week's Pulse magazine features an image by Steve Cerio, whose exhibit at Zahra's Studio opened yesterday. POJO's March 10th Enjoy also includes an article about the Cerio exhibit.
The centerfold of Pulse contains a review written by Abby Luby of the exhibits of Grace Knowlton and Simon Draper at VanBrunt Gallery with several images of the two artists' work.

There was a NYTimes photographer at bau yesterday taking images in connection Westchester Section feature on cooperative art groups in the region.

Finally, in another example of following a wildly circuitous route toward learning of news close to home, I was directed via MAN to Kriston Capp's focus at Grammer Police.com on the suspension of a Middletown, NY High School teacher in a confusing case of nude figure drawing classes, and initimations of impropriety. I have not yet been able to fully read the accounts of the case, but I'm passing it along so that others may do so as there is currently action being taken to support reinstatement of the teacher, Peter Panse and this is a fresh story. There are links in the Grammer Police post to the original reports of the incident from the Times Herald Record. I'll post updates when I know more.

The Big Weekend

I've spent much of the last two weeks in NYC, so I've been out of the loop a little on what's going on in Beacon this week.
The Armory, Scope, Diva, and Pulse shows are going on in Manhattan, and I won't be able to make back down this weekend. If someone wants to report what they've seen, I'd be happy to pass it along.

In Beacon, it is Second Saturday, and here is what I know....This is a real quick rundown, as I am pressed for time at the moment. For more information, please visit the baca website, or the sites of any of the galleries. Links are in the sidebar. If you still have questions, feel free to email me.

Openings are happening at most of the galleries in town.
Bannerman Island Gallery is showing work by Frank Cannas and Judy Reynolds.

Kiesendahl + Calhoun Gallery is featuring paintings by Kate McCloughlin. I hear that this will also be the last show at Kiesendahl + Calhoun.

RiverWinds Gallery is also having a reception with "city scape" paintings by Robert Divito, and recycled material sculpture John Jackson.

Wild Wood Gallery is featuring the Patricia White Watson collection of photographs.

Zahra's Studio will feature Steve Cerio's illustrations

I have heard, but not confirmed that Bulldog is having an open studio Saturday. They are usually 12-5 pm.

Spire Studios is hosting its Quarterly Open Studio featuring an exhibit curated by Jackie Skryznski and Robert Modaffari. Exhibition artists are: Kerry Dennehy, Greg Graham, Ann LePore, Lorie Merhige, Eric Sung, Lydia Viscardi. There will be music later on....the open studio starts at 6pm and runs very late.

bau will be featuring Christopher Staples' collaborations with many different artists.
Para/site will be having a closing reception for Curry Mendes' "Color Me Bad" exhibit.

Knowlton, Draper at VanBrunt Gallery

Just a note, tomorrow, Saturday the 4th, the Vanbrunt Gallery is having an opening featuring the work of Grace Knowlton, and Simon Draper. I imagine the reception runs from 6-9.
