Highland Studio is Moving.

Highland Studio, Beacon's resident print studio offering an array of digital services and archival printing for artists is moving from it's Main St. location to a temporary space at 14 N Chestnut in Beacon. Joe and Lisa expect to relocate into a new permanent location in Cold Spring in the Fall.
All contact info for Highland Studio remains the same, however, the phone number will change after the permanent move in the Fall.

Spire Studios in Beacon is hosting:

An exhibit of artists from EDGE Gallery in Denver, CO." June 23-July 16

Spire Studios in Beacon will be exhibiting the work of a group of Denver based artists as one half of an exchange between artists of Beacon, NY and Denver, CO. The Denver artists are all members of EDGE Gallery, an artist run contemporary gallery that has been a staple of the Denver art scene for 20 years.


The artwork of the Beacon artists working under the name Via Beacon will be on exhibit EDGE Gallery.

Both groups are working within the constraints of artwork that will compress to fit into a standard Postal Service flat rate box and then expand when installed in the gallery.

The concurrent Denver-Beacon exhibits will open on June 23 and run through July 16.

The exhibit at Spire Studios will open with a reception starting at 7pm on June 23. Hours for the exhibit will by Sat, Sun 12-6pm and by appointment.

Around town today

There has not been much time for typin' on the computer machine for me lately.

A couple of quick things:

Tony Moore will be giving a talk at bau this afternoon at 4pm. If you miss it today, there is another talk scheduled for July 1.

Yesterday's POJO ran a story on the current exhibit of artwork done by artists working at the Tallix, Arcos and Polich founderies at the Howland Art Center.

The artists participating in the Via Beacon exhibit in Denver Colorado caused a rush of unusual traffic at the Beacon Post Office on Saturday as they mailed off their artwork in USPS flat rate priority boxes before the deadline. As I approached the counter with my box, the woman asked me "Is that box going to Denver?" I said yes, and she continued, " I don't know what's going on, but something is up with these boxes."

EDGE Gallery, an artist run space in Denver, is hosting the exhibit of Beacon area artists. The work of the Denver will be on exhibit at Spire Studios. The Denver and Beacon exhibits will run concurrently from June 23 to July 16. The opening reception at Spire will be held on Friday, June 23 starting at 7pm.

Last night and today

Well, last night was Second Saturday. Van Brunt was the only place I managed to hit early in the day. I think the show is a nice gathering of the works of Richard Butler, Catherine Welshman, and Scott Daniel Ellison in the particular and odd way each treats narrative and figure in his/her work. I find this presentation of Butler's work more concise and effective that his VB show from last year.

A group of us headed out to Ridgefield CT last night for an artist's mixer at the Aldrich. I hadn't been since befor the addition was finished and it is a remarkable space. There's a great selection of work there right now, from a Kiefer installation to an exhibit of Damien Loeb to a selection of regional artists including Mary Temple and Michael Zansky.

Beacon artist, Charlotte Schulz was there last night. She is scheduled to have an exhibit at the Aldrich in sometime 2008.

Events on today's agenda include a Reading by John Ashbery at 2pm at Dia:Beacon.
I'll be in Peekskill today. Peekskill's annual open studio tour continues until 5pm.
There's a reception at HVCCA for Artist in Residence, Itziar Barrio. Itziar is showing work done while in Peekskill over the last two months. After the reception, the museum is hosting a discussion on spirituality and art in connection with the current exhibit Reverence.

Leonard Freed to give talk at Van Brunt Gallery

Photographer Leonard Freed will be giving a talk on Saturday June 3 at Van Brunt Gallery in connection with his current exhibit at the gallery. The talk starts at 4pm.

Locust Grove exhbition opportunity:
The deadline for this has passed, but for future reference, Locust Grove is seeking "contemporary Hudson River School style artwork" for public exhibition at the site. Application proceedures can be found here.

Live/Work space opportunity in Middletown CT:

The North End Artists Cooperative in Middletown is
accepting applications for a 1BR, 875 sq. ft.
live/work space available immediately. Rent is
$520/month and does not include utilities, however,
$600 is deposited annually into each tenant's art
equity account upon completion or 30 hrs arts
community service.

NEAC is an Equal Opportunity, affordable housing
association. Eligibility to apply for this unit is
based on an income cap of appx. $30,885. Maximum
number of tenants for a 1BR is two people. One cat or
dog is allowed.

Each unit is recently renovated and features a
dishwasher & washer/dryer. The co-op is conveniently

This Weekend in Beacon

Here is a last minute posting of some art related goings on this weekend.

Today at 1pm, Dia:Beacon has another gallery talk. Today's talk is given by Dia curator Lynne Cook, and she will be discusssing the work of Agnes Martin.

Also this weekend, Dia is kicking of a series of summer film screenings. The series, curated by Douglas Crimp is titled, Lives of Performers: Art, Film, Performance around 1970. This week's presentation will feature work by Andy Warhol and Shirley Clarke.
Films will be screened every Saturday and Sunday at 2pm through Labor Day Weekend. A complete film schedule can be found here

Later on tonight, the benefit for Flying Swine continues with musical performances at Howland Cultural Center by Jennifer Clapp and Gwen Laster.

We attended last night's Taste of Beacon, portion of the Swine benefit. Selected scenes were presented last night, including two scenes from Deborah Breevort's play "Signs of Life" which will be presented in its entirety latter this fall in Beacon by Flying Swine. I generally don't get all twittery on theater, but this production is certainly something to look forward to. The two actors (I need to ) were stunning and incredibly natural as a married couple. The response to this short performance was resounding. I'll of course post info on the upcoming performances as they happen. You'll not want to miss this.

Enough of the theater review. I've been backlogged lately, but this weekend, I will be posting images ov events from the past month, and there are some upcoming calls for artists and such that I'll be posting as well.

Rebecca Solnit reading at Dia

Rebecca Solnit will be presenting a reading of her recent writing at Dia:Beacon tomorrow, May 21 at 2pm. The reading is part of the ongoing Readings in Contemporary Litererature series.

Rebecca Solnit is the author of ten books, including A Field Guide to Getting Lost (2005); Hope in the Dark, Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities (2004); and River of Shadows: Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West (2003). An activist and longtime San Franciscan, she writes regularly for publications such as TomDispatch, Orion, Sierra, Harper's and the San Francisco Chronicle, and other outlets about landscape, cities, and other geographies, the environment, politics, and visual culture. Her awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism, and a Lannan Foundation Fellowship.

Evolving from the Readings in Contemporary Poetry Series held at Dia:Chelsea from 1987 to 2003, the Readings in Contemporary Literature series invites writers working in a variety of literary genres to read from their recent work at Dia:Beacon and to participate in a short residency in the city of Beacon.

Museum announces new director

HVCCA in Peekskill has announced the appointment of Matthew Distel as it's new executive Director. Distel arrives at HVCCA from Cincinnati, Ohio where he served as Associate Curator of Exhibitions and Head of the Curatorial Department at the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati.

Also, HVCCA's next exhibition, Reverence, opens tomorrow, May 20. There will be an opening reception for the exhibit at the Museum from 4-6pm. I expect that I will be pulling docent duty at the museum somewhere abouts 2pm. Come by and say hi.

Bruce Molsky at Rosendale Cafe

Bruce Molsky will be performing at the Rosendale Cafe, in Rosendale, NY on Saturday, May 20 at 8pm. If you're interested in attending, I suggest you arrive early and grab a seat as Bruce's shows tend to pull a crowd.

Bruce's most recent album was released last week on Compass Records.

News from Dia

I get home from a very long day, and learn via MAN that Len Riggio is stepping down as chairman of the board at Dia. Carol Vogel reports in the NY Times that Riggio cites the enormous undertaking of building a new Chelsea outpost, searching for a new director, in addition to the general concerns of steering such an institution, as demanding more energy than he has to give.

So much for all of those who gripe that there's never anything new at Dia:Beacon

DCAC Individual Artist fellowship & Rinnhofer discussion

The Dutchess County Arts Council will be awarding its 2006-07 Artist Fellowship in the area of Digital and Sound Art. The amount of $5000 will either go entirely to one artist as a full fellowship, or divided into partial fellowships.
Deadline for the application is May 31. Applicants must be resident in Dutchess County for two years as of May 31 2006 to be eligible.

New Max Neuhaus sound piece at Dia:Beacon

Dia Art Foundation will inaugurate a new sound work by artist Max Neuhaus on May 6, 2006, at Dia:Beacon, Riggio Galleries. Commissioned for the museum, Time Piece Beacon (2005) establishes a zone of sound around the perimeter of the facility. Tailored to the building and its surrounding environment, the work introduces an aural experience into the museum. Time Piece Beacon enters Dia’s collection alongside Neuhaus’s Times Square (1977), a sound work located on a pedestrian island at Broadway between 45th and 46th Streets in New York City, which was acquired in 2002.

ROCA call for curatorial proposals

ROCA(Rockland Center for the Arts, West Nyack, NY) is accepting proposals from curators for the 2008-09 exhibition season in the 1,800 sqft Emerson Gallery. Proposal deadline is Oct 15, 2006.
