Back home - July in Beacon

I returned from Germany on Friday night.  I finished up my initial offering in the 10x10x10 exhibit in Ellenville, in which I'm participating, and which opened last night.  I was in Ellenville briefly for the opening there, and since I've been wading through tiny waves of jet lag, I decided to forego Beacon's Second Saturday openings.

If you also were unable to attend any of the openings, here's a bit of what we both missed last night.

Zahra's is back with work by NUBS and Chris Machin in the Pinstripe Show.  Were not talking zoot suits or Vanessa Tellez's show describes the ethos of the the gallery at Zahra's personified by this exhibit: 

The rise of trendy hip bullshit art is rising by the second.  Lowbrow is in, so that means everyone is trying to cash in on any kind of street art or gritty conceptual trite.  We ain't gonna give you art done by a hipster that just decided the way to sell his paintings is to get in touch with his lowlife side.

Go North's new exhibit of collage and mixed media paintings by Jonathan Allen called Terminal Daydream.  A reading was scheduled prior to the opening featuring writers Chris O Cook, Greg Fuchs, Joe Millar, Chris Ross and Lauren Russell.

bau has an exhibit of paintings by member Michael Gaydos called Temptation.

Floor One's new exhibit features the work of Josh Jenkins.

Open Space was planning for a massive caravan/happening/cook out for We Are Familia, the group exhibit that will run through Sept. 6.  The show features work by Holly Stevenson, Yoh Nagao, Peter Kienzle/Superette, Jesse Brown, Marc McAndrews, Hisham Bharoocha, Amy Rupple, Chris Yormick, Nightwood, SEEE.  Here's a rundown of the concept behind WE ARE FAMILIA.

I read on the BCN site yesterday that 400 square will be closing at the end of this month, and Hermitage has recently closed.  The guys at Go North announced in early May that they'll be closing at the end of this month as well...I'll have more on this soon.

It appears that a new shop/gallery called Dream in Plastic will be opening at the beginning of August at 177 Main St. The joint is accepting submissions for its first gallery exhibit in the space.  Analog will be on exhibit from August 8 through Sept. 7 and will feature images taken with a plastic camera.  Submission guidelines are on the blog.

Michael Zansky at the Roger Smith Lab Gallery in New York through March 27

I was walking along Lexington Avenue, headed toward Grand Central last week and I came across this installation by Michael Zansky at the Lab gallery which is part of the Roger Smith Hotel at 47th and Lex. Projects at the Lab are curated by D. Dominick Lombardi.
Zansky's installation is titled Strangelove and it will be on view through March 27. The work consists of a mannequin in a dress suit prone on a rotating stand with a large gilt looking brain-meteor-turd form strapped on its chest. Three of the large lenses Zansky often employs were installed in the space, two of which provided distorted magnifications of the mannequin's head as it slowly spun.
Had I been thinking, I would have taken a short video as that's what all the kids are into these days. Still photos are so 20th Century.

Michael Zansky is having a solo exhibit that is opening at Ann Street Gallery in Newburgh on Saturday, May 10. 100 AD is the name of the exhibit and it will be on view through June 7. Tomorrow's reception will be held from 6-9pm. Ann Street Gallery is at 104 Ann St in Newburgh

March 1 opening @ VanBrunt Gallery

VanBrunt Gallery will be opening a new set of exhibits on Saturday, March 1. Work by Thomas Huber, Ed Smith and Michael Zansky will be on exhibit at the gallery through March 31. An opening reception will be held from 6-9pm.

Catching up and things i missed

Jill Reynolds and Dan Spitzer are among the NY glass artists included in the Ann St. Gallery's current exhibit "Handle with Care: Glass Works." The other artists featured in the exhibit are: Glenn Able, Suzan Etkin, Brenden Fitzgerald, Nick London and Michiko Sakano.

The exhibit opened this past Saturday. On December 16 at 2pm, the gallery will host an illustrated talk where the artists will discuss their work and processes.

Albert Shahinian Fine Art in Poughkeepsie is exhibiting work by photographer Billy Name and painter Margaret Crensen. This show also opened on Saturday. Kathleen interviewed Name for her write up in last weekend's Enjoy section. The gallery is located at 196 Main St. in Poughkeepsie.

Finally, back in Beacon at Zahra Studio, Jennifer Ruell-Huckle is exhibiting what sounds like a multitude of items in various media for her show, "The Cult of True Womanhood , Reliquaries, Rituals, and Remedies." The exhibit will be on view through January 30.

Almost finally, I'm in Denver still for another two weeks. A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that Michael Zansky, from the Hudson's other shore, is currently exhibiting at the Sandy Carson Gallery in Denver. Here is a write up on Zansky's show by Michael Paglia in Westword.

Absolutely finally, another recent NY in Denver item; Michele Mosko, who I met via our mutual activities at HVCCA in Peekskill, is a fellow Denver native. She just recently moved back out here, opening her gallery, Michele Mosko Fine Art, around the corner from my old pad. This weekend's Denver Post featured a write up of Michele's space by Kyle MacMillan.

I'm a bit behind right now, but I have been posting on things that I've been seeing over at my personal blog.

Continental divide

I had a delightful drive cross country this week and made it into Denver last night. Next week I'll be preparing for an exhibit I'm doing with Marc Willhite at the Curtis Arts and Humanities Center in Greenwood Village, CO. The Center is located just south of Denver, and the exhibit opens on Saturday Nov, 3. Marc and I will be giving a gallery talk on Thursday Nov, 15 at 5:30. I'll be posting more informatin and images from the show at christopheralbert.com and my personal blog. The exhibit will be a selection of paintings sculpture and installation work that investigates the Six Memos for the Next Millenium by Italo Calvino.

Also in Denver next week: Michael Zansky, from Rockland County will be exhibiting work from his Supreme Court Series at the Sandy Carson Gallery in Denver beginning on Nov, 2.
