August 15, 2009 Fill your plate for two good causes: The 3rd Annual Taste of Beacon & The Clearwater Wine & Chocolate Sail

Beacon will be hosting two separate tasteful events benefitting two worthwhile organizations in town next Saturday.

I've mentioned in the past that I'm a board member of the Beacon Community Center, and the BCC is the beneficiary for proceeds from the 3rd Annual Taste of Beacon which will be taking place on the 15th fromm 1 to 4 pm in the parking lot of the Piggy Bank at 446 Main St.  The Taste of Beacon will bring together several of Beacon's eateries and resident chefs in one place for your sampling pleasure.  

Taste of Beacon Partner restaurants include:  Beacon Bagel, The Piggy Bank, Homespun, Max's on Main, Cheesecake Annie's, Ambrosia (Jamaican Spice), Cup and Saucer Tea Room, Mr. Diaz's Kebabs, Home Cooking New York - Jennifer Clair, Poppy's, Common Ground Farm, Pleasant Ridge II, Sukothai, Zora Dora's, Zuzu's

Tickets for Taste of Beacon :  $25 for individuals, $40 for admission for two. 

Children under 12 are free.

Here's how it works:  Just send me an email at info@maykr.com with TOB Ticket Giveaway in the subject line before 8pm on Wednesday, August 12.  The winner's name will be picked at random from my Stepmom's Grandfather Herb's hat and announced on that same evening.  

So get those emails in....It should go without saying, but I'm saying it anyway, only enter if you know that you can and will attend Taste of Beacon.  And, if you don't win, we'd still love to see you there.  It's for a good cause, ya know.  Finally, if you want to buy tickets, you can also email me and I'll hook you up.

As if that wasn't enough indulgement for a good cause, The Sloop Clearwater will be hosting a Wine and Chocolate Tasting Sail from 6-9pm on, also on Aug 15.  All proceeds from the sail will benefit Clearwater's envronmental education and advocacy work.

The Clearwater will sail out of the Beacon Ferry Dock, Red Flynn Drive.

Tickets:  $75 for adults, $25 for children under 12 (I think that because consume less wine) Just kidding. JUST KIDDING! I can assure you children aboard will not be served wine. But, they will be treated to the traditional jazz stylings of the Perry Beekman Trio.

Partition Street Wine Shop and Lucky Chocolates, both of Saugerties will be serving up the evening's fare.

Vendors sought for the 1st Annual Social Pariah Festival to benefit the Hudson Valley Pitch for Kids Fund in February

Vanessa Tellez, the gallery director over at Zahra's Studio, is organizing The First Annual Hudson Valley Social Pariah Festival to benefit the Hudson Valley Pitch for Kids Fund at the Holiday Inn in Fishkill on Saturday Feb 28th from 2-10pm.
The event will include live music and other entertainment, tattoo artists, alternative vendors, an an all around good time.
The event is seeking vendors to rent booth spaces for the event. The fee for a 10'x10' booth space is $75. Larger spaces are available as well.
All proceeds will to the Pitch for Kids Fund which funds several social organizations that benefit the health and welfare of children in the Hudson Valley region.
The event will have a $5 admission fee and persons must be at least 18 years old to enter. For More information, email Vanessa at tellesvanessa[at]aol.com.

Fovea Exhibitions benefit auction December 12, 7pm

A benefit party and auction for Fovea Exhibitions will be held on Friday, Dec 12 at the Howland Cultural Center beginning at 7pm. The evening's events will include an indoor projection, party featuring the musical stylings of Hank and the Skinny 3, and an art auction. The items up for auction are listed here. There's a $10 cover at the door.

Fovea's current exhibit, Behind Bars by Andrew Lichtenstein, is on exhibit through early January 2009. With its distinctly local relevance, this exhibit clearly demonstrates the greatest strength of the gallery which is framing essential aspects of the human condition as evidenced in real, and often crucial life events in a manner that is direct and personally affecting. Graphics posted in the gallery announce the facts that within 50 miles of Beacon there are 11 correctional facilities employing over 6,000 people (if I'm correctly recalling the facts - I can't remember the number of inmates).

This is the first exhibit where I felt the size of the gallery limited to the ultimate effectiveness of the presentation. The compelling narratives of prison life - both inside and outside of the facilities -conveyed in Lichtenstein's work are each worthy of extended exposure. Unfortunately, having these separate strains represented by just a few images each gives the effect of a series of teasers when a more homogenized selection, though undoubtedly incomplete given the depth and complexity of this very real and very locally pertinent topic, might offer a more succinct body of evidence.

Maykr, meet Globatron. Globatron, meet Maykr

I recently mentioned Emil Alzamora's interview on globatron.org. Well, there's another interview on that site: mine.

Based out of Jacksonville Fla, Globatron is the alter ego of Byron King. Byron told me he and his young family are thinking of moving up to the Beacon area in the not too distant future. The ball's in maykr's court now to reciprocate and find out more about Globatron. The site appears to be well ensconced in the Jax art community with a few dispersed outposts. I think Byron and his energies would be a welcome addition to this community.
Sadly, as my email correspondence with Byron was flying back and forth over the past two weeks, I learned about his battle with a brain tumor which is growing and considered possibly malignant. Byron has set up a cafe press shop to help raise funds for his medical costs. Emil has donated an image to the shop, I'll be doing so very shortly, and I expect to be doing some shopping there. There is also a paypal link on the Globatron homepage to donate to the cause.

Wilfredo Morel reception/fundraiser in Red Hook NY Oct 4, 2008

On Oct 4 from 3-6pm, The Greig Farm at 223 Pitcher Lane in Red Hook (12571) will be hosting a reception and gourmet BBQ for Pieces of Joy, and exhibit of steel sculptures by Wilfredo Morel.
The reception is a fundraiser to benefit the Hudson River HealthCare Farmworker Medical Care Fund.
(Now as with many things lately, I dropped the ball in posting this event in a timely manner, as the RSVP date for this event was Sept 26. But give it a shot, call: 914.734.8736.
Admission for the reception/dinner is $45, $10 for children 12 & under.

Wilfredo is the recipient of the 2008 Dutchess County Executive Art Award for individual artist.
