The Barnes and Noble bookstore in Poughkeepsie will be hosting a book signing for Charles R. Smith Jr.'s latest book "My People." This newly released book features Smith's photographic portraits which act as an environment through which the text of Langston Hughes' poem "My People" floats.
In a release posted on the Fauquier County Public Schools website (Warrenton, VA) recounting Smith's presentations to the students, Smith was quoted:

I’ve always loved to read, and Langston Hughes was one of the early influences on my life,” Smith explained. “His poem ‘My People’ has few words so I focused on facial expressions. I took the pictures in black and white and used a sepia tone. I think the simplicity of the poem is able to come through in the pictures.

Charles R Smith Jr lives in Poughkeepsie. He's the author of over twenty books, most of them geared toward children, and his first novel "Chameleon" was released this past fall. Smith was also a contributed items ( here and here) to the Beacon Dispatch when it existed in print form.
The book signing is taking place at the Barnes and Noble on Rte 9 (2518 South Rd) in Poughkeepsie at 1pm.

On for the weekend

A new exhibit opens today at the Howland Cultural Center. “Changing Expressions” - a celebration of Latino-American Artists is a group show featuring many local artists. The opening is happening today from 3-5pm.

Tonight at 7pm, Open Space will host a reading and book signing by left-wing political cartoonist and Beacon local David Rees. Note that this event is not suitable for children.

Tomorrow in Peekskill: HVCCA is hosting a free arts day. Admission to the museum is free all day from 12-6pm. Here's what's planned for the day:
2:00pm: Docent Tour of ORIGINS exhibition led by HVCCA President / Co-Founder Dr. Livia Straus.
3:00pm: Special music performance by the Westchester Symphonic Winds clarinet and saxophone quartets.
4:00pm: Gallery talk with HVCCA’S 2008 Artist-in-Residence Karen Sargsyan.
Also at 4pm, a ceremony will be held at which the museum will receive at $20,000 grant from Consulate General of the Netherlands New York (CGNY) for the Public Tile Program.
About the program:

The Public Tile Project is an arts and education initiative that unites the
students of the Hudson Valley with their Dutch heritage. The project
incorporates over 1500 individual tiles/artwork created by students from over 30
schools etc commemorating historic events, persons, geographical history, flora
and fauna of the region in the style of Dutch Delft tile painting. When fully
installed throughout Peekskill, the tiles will become a permanent marker along a
1 1/2 mile historic trail beginning at the Museum and ending at the river. The
final installment of the tiles will culminate with a ceremony during the Dutch
Quadricentennial Saturday, September 12th, 2009.

Hermitage will be hosting a book release/signing tomorrow, July 26 for the new monograph on the work of Greg Slick, Between Scylla and Charybdis. An exhibit of Greg's new work will also be on exhibit.

The signing/reception will take place from 6-9pm at Hermitage. The exhibit will run through August 17th.

Angelika Rinnhofer book signing in Katonah, NY, Dec 19

I'm tardy in passing this along. But that's nothing new.

Angelika Rinnhofer will be at the Katonah Museum of Art tomorrow, (Dec. 19) signing copies of her Contact Sheet monograph which has been produced to accompany her current exhibit, Sammelsurium, on view at Light Work in Syracuse NY through Dec 28.

Tomorrow's book signing event is being co-hosted by the Katonah Museum of Art, and The Harvey School, and will take place 6-7:30pm.

Panel discussion & book signing @ Fovea Exhibitions Gallery Beacon, Oct 20

more than seven hours, and lead them past government checkpoints, which leaves them
vulnerable to attacks. Girls as young as 8 years old have been attacked, raped and killed
trying to collect fuel and water.

In conjunction with the current exhibition of work by Ron Haviv, The Children of Darfur, Fovea Exhibitions Gallery Beacon will be hosting a panel discussion and book signing.

The panel discussion, scheduled for 4pm, will focus on the current situation in Darfur. Participating panelists are: Ron Haviv, Alison Morley of the International Center for Photography and Ellie Tolmie of UNICEF.

After the discussion, Ron Haviv will be signing copies of the book Darfur, twenty Years of War and Genocide in Sudan (a compilation of images by world renown photographers)

Haviv's exhibit will be on view through Nov 4.

Matthew Sinclair Kinney's ink wash drawings of New York City are featured with the poetry of Bruna Mori in a book entitled Derive.

Matt told me that some years back, he was on the street in New York, working on some of his drawings, and this woman stopped to speak with him, and asked if he would be willing to have his work combined with her poetry for a book. The woman was poet Bruna Mori, and the book has recently been published by Meritage Press.

The book is available at Amazon.com and locally at World's End Books. I understand that the bookstore at Dia:Beacon will also be carrying the title soon.

World's End Books at 474 Main St in Beacon will be hosting a book signing and reception on Saturday, Feb 24 from 5-7pm. Both Mori and Kinney will be present at the event, and Mori will be reading selections of her poetry. For more information, call 845.831.1760
