Creative Process Dialogue at the Beacon Institute, April 8, 4pm.

I'll be moderating a talk with artists Erica Hauser and Ian Wickstead tomorrow at 4pm at the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries.  The talk is part of a series accompanying the exhibit curated by Linda Stewart, Water, Water, Everywhere. 
The Beacon Institute is located at 199 Main St in Beacon.  The next Creative Process Dialogue is scheduled for Sept 18 featuring Peter Brauch & Shawn Snow and will be moderated by Carl Van Brunt.

This Saturday's art activities.

Here are a few of the things going on this Saturday- in addition to the items in my two previous posts...check back, time permitting, I'll be adding more.
Spire Studios is holding an open studio party starting at 6pm. I don't know all the details yet, other than there will be an exhibit of Todd Sargood's work in the old Pack and Paddle space on the first floor.

The Beacon Institute playing host to the Dutchess Indie Film Festival, a screening of local films from 6 to 9pm. In its gallery space, the Institute is showing arial photographs of man-made sites along the Hudson taken by workers for the Center of Land Use Interpretation from 2004-2008.

400 square is hosting an opening reception for an exhibit of photography by Diane Smook. The exhibit "Portraits from the Garden: An Uncommon View" will remain on view through July 9. Saturday's reception will take place from 4-8pm.

bau's 54th exhibit will feature work by Linda Richichi called Revolution. A reception for the artist will be held from 6-9pm.

Jesse Lebwohl-Steiner show off his goods in Reflections and Cycles, an exhibit of video documenting performances from the early 2000's at Gallery G, 15 E. Main St. (on the creekside of the building.) You can hardly go wrong when one of the works listed is about watermelon and love. Take note, this exhibit includes nudity -- of the male variety.

Sculptor Herman Roggeman is holding an open house at his Metal Concepts studio beginning at 6pm. Metal Concepts is located at the very eastern end of Main St. (9 Hanna Lane) near the old Tallix complex.

Mike + Doug Starn's Big Bambú will be open on Saturday from 11-4pm.

Don't forget the Hudson River Market which takes place every Saturday 10 - 5pm in the grassy patch at Cross and Main St.

Fovea Exhibitions will be holding another outdoor multimedia projection on that same grassy patch starting at dusk. Man vs. Nature features images from local and international photojournalists. This presentation, curated by photo editors Kelley Kingman and Amrita Singh is the first of the series to solicit submissions for considerations.
Bring a blanket or chair. In the event of rain, the projection will be moved across the street to Bumblebee Art & Music at 163 Main St.

The Beacon Institute will be opening a new exhibit of photographs by Ted Kawalerski with a reception on Saturday, Oct 4 from 5-7pm.

Hudson Beach Glass is hosting an opening reception tomorrow evening in the upstairs gallery for an exhibit by Cara Wood-Ginder called Objectification. The reception will be held from 6-8pm and the exhibit will run through Nov. 15.

There will be a dedication of a peace totem created by Matthew Kinney on Sunday, the 5th at Our Lady's Garden, next to the chapel at Hiddenbrooke beginning at 4pm.

Ahh Spring, Part 3: In Print in in the Media and in the Air

Here's a round up of things that have crossed by desk.

As we were heading down to Philly for a quick errand, we heard WDST morning dj's Gattine & Franz talking with Poughkeepsie Journal's music columnist John Barry about Joe Bertoluzzi's Bridge Music Project. Joe's has been garnered many moral supporters for his project, and his is working with a marketing class at Marist to create the pr campaign. The biggest hurdle remains the financial one, with Joe estimating $1M to execute the project as planned in 2009 for the Quadricentennial celebration of Henry Hudson's sailing of the Hudson River.

Also in the POJO this week. The enjoy section features an interview with Leigh Wen whose work is on view at the Beacon Institute through July. Leigh will be giving a talk at the Beacon Institute on April 26.

Last week's Enjoy focused on the current exhibit at Vassar's Francis Lehman Loeb Art Center Out of Shape: Stylistic Distortions of the Human Form which features selections from the collection of Ken and Vicki Logan. The exhibit will be on view until June 8. Artist Layla Ali is scheduled to give a talk on April 25 at 5pm and a reception for the exhibit will be held at 6pm after the talk.

James Westwater has a book out now on his Plywood Chateaux. With contributions from Steven Evans, Zane Fischer, Ryan Schulz, Naomi Sachs, and photograpy by Tom Moore, the book is available through Amazon.com and locally at Burlock, Relic and the Dia:Beacon bookstore. The Plywood Chateaux have been featured on the Treehugger blog, and the Shedworking blog, and they'll be included in an upcoming book called Shedworking in July. Check out the video by Tom Moore of a chateau being constructed.
I'll get more into James' project shortly. It's uncanny how the trajectory of James' work, given his forthcoming exhibit at Van Brunt will include "Homeless Chateau" which started out as "Chateau for Homeless Artist" evokes so many of the same issues that are broached with the Habitat for Artists project that Simon Draper is conducting.
It's one of those great moments of synchronicity. I say that just because prior to being present when Simon's HFA was born, I found myself dreaming of building a small self contained isolated structure within our apartment in which to meditate or work in extremely small scale.

Last item in the air; it seems that Collaborative Concepts is working to secure an exhibition space down in Peekskill in which an invitational show will be held later this year providing it all comes together.

The Beacon Institute hosts free seminar on digital photography in November

Nature photographer Robert Rodrigues Jr will be giving a free seminar on digital photography on Nov. 17 from 6-7:30 at the Beacon Institute at 199 Main St. RSVP by Nov. 10 to reserve a seat. Contact information and details on the seminar here.

Currently on exhibit in the gallery at the Beacon Institute are the photographs of Beacon photographer John Fasulo. John's work will be on exhibit at the gallery through January 2008.
