Openings happening at Van Brunt Gallery and Hudson Beach gallery, Saturday Aug 1, 2009

Van Brunt Gallery is opening a pair of exhibits this coming Saturday.  The gallery's space at 130 Main will play host to an exhibit by Thomas Huber and Susan English.  Across the street, Hudson Beach Glass's second floor gallery will be hosting a group show called What's the Story featuring work by Emil Alzamora, Richard Deon, Deborah Davidowits, Louis Fatta, Karlos Carcamo, Stanford Kay, Kirsten Kucer, W. David Powell, Charlotte Schulz, Michael Sibilia, Carl Van Brunt and Zoe Van Brunt.

Receptions for both exhibits will be held from 6-9pm and they'll both run through August 31. 

Cultural omnivores dilemma: Saturday June 27

There's there will be a lot of offerings vying  for your attention on Saturday.  Here's a sampling:

In addition to the first installment of it's series of professional development workshops held in collaboration with the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Dia:Beacon will also be holding a Gallery talk at 1pm.  Robert Lubar will be discussing the work of Antoni Tapies.

Jaanika Peerna will be on hand from 3-6pm to discuss her current exhibit, Traces of a Sweet Connect at Go North.

Van Brunt Gallery is having an opening for part duex of its Quad show which will be on view in the gallery proper and in the second floor gallery at Hudson Beach glass and at Moxie.   This group exhibit  features the work of Colin Barclay, Richard Bruce, Richard Butler, Bo Gehring, Tadashi Hashimoto, David Loeb and Stephen Niccolls.  The reception starts at 6pm.  The exhibition runs through July 27.

One of the Hessel Museum's Franz West sculptures (Blue Couch) has been relocated on the

roof of the museum by Rachel Harrison.

The Hessel Museum at Bard College will be holding an opening reception for Consider The Lobster and Other Essays, a duo exhibitions, the first is a survey of the work of Rachel Harrison and the second is a curatorial collaboration between Harrison and Nayland Blake, Alan Ruppersburg, Harry Dodge, Tom Burr and Andrea Zittel in which works of the artists are installed amongst selections from the museum's permanent collection.  The opening reception is happening from 1 to 5pm.  As usual, a chartered bus will be bringing visitors up from NYC and returning them after the opening.  For more email ccs@bard.edu.  The exhibits will remain on view through December 20, 2009.

The Center for Photography in Woodstock is hosting a talk by Elinor Carucci starting at 8pm.  This talk looks very interesting I'm not certain if the maykr team will be able to attend, but we're currently in discussion about our plans for that day.  Carruci's work is jarring, dramatic and I'd like to hear her speak about it. Tickets for the talk are $7, $5 for students and members.  Contact CPW to make reservations and to check for availability. 

Dar Williams will be performing a benefit concert for ecoartspace and Habitat for Artists in at the McKenna Theater at SUNY New Paltz.  The show starts at 7:30 Tix are $25 ($30 at the door) call 845.257.3844 for info.

Concra, Nordeman open at Van Brunt Gallery on Saturday, June 6

Van Brunt Gallery's next exhibit, which is opening on Saturday, June 6 will feature Joe Concra's paintings and Landon Nordeman's photographs. The opening reception will take place from 6 to 9 pm, and the exhibit will be on view through June 22.

A little urban sprawl tonight with Van Brunt Gallery's Quad Show exhibit

The Van Brunt Gallery is busting out of the confines of its cubbyhole and holding an exhibit in three locations: Van Brunt Gallery at 137 Main St., Hudson Beach Glass at 162 Main, and the gallery's satellite, vanbruntgallery@moxie at 544 Main St.. The Quad show is one of many events and exhibitions in the area that will be recognizing the 400th Anniversary of Hudson's sail up the river that would eventually bear his name.
The exhibit opening tonight features work that responds to the Hudson River and its environs. Featured artists are: Joseph Diebboll, Stefan Hagen, J. Gilbert Plantinga, Christie Scheele, Michael Sibilia and James Westwater. The reception(s) will be happening tonight from 6-9pm. The exhibit runs through April 27.

On Destinations never reached and short lived visions

During the Summer between fourth and fifth grades, my dad, future stepmom and I RV'd around western Canada for about six weeks. One day while tooling down the road, my dad spied a grand enticing lake over the tree tops. Apparently, the lure of the undoubtedly prime fishing available in that lake was overwhelming enough that he pulled onto the shoulder of the highway and we set off on foot for that alpine oasis. Now, ours was not a party well versed in the language of the wilderness by any stretch, and after an extended period of walking, visions of reeling in giant trout were replaced by visions of unsuspecting tourists being mauled by grizzlies. We were lucky that we didn't get lost on our way back to the RV. As it turned out we never found that lake.
I mention this as the memory was brought to mind as I endeavored to make my way to the Marist Art Gallery on Thursday afternoon for the art reception being held for a group exhibit of digital work, including that of Carl Van Brunt. The art gallery, as I understand, is located in the Steel Plant Studios building which is very visible right along side Rt 9. Although I've passed the building many times, I never thought to go there, therefore, I never wondered how to get there. Coming from the North, I turned at the next available light just passed the building. Unfortunately it seems, the only direct access point to the building is from the North and I didn't find any connecting streets, so I had to back track which took a while given the heavy afternoon traffic that cycled slowly through the lights in that area. Once I finally made it in to the correct area, I did not easily find any visitor parking. All the lots around the Steel Plant buildings seemed to be permit parking, so I did a once-round the lot and decided to continue on home after a long day of work. Maybe is was all just a mirage anyway.
Anyway, here are some images from the current, and fleetingly brief exhibit at Van Brunt Gallery which will end after tomorrow.

Van Brunt Gallery Squeezes One Out on March 7, 2009

In Between is a brief group show being held at Van Brunt Gallery from March 7-16. There's an opening reception happening on Saturday from 6-9pm.

The live online MAYKRvision feed of the panel talk held at Van Brunt Gallery on Sunday went off pretty well - with a few glitches along the way, but considering the lo-fi setup, the sound is very clear. It was a good test run. Thanks to Ty and Derek at Floor One Gallery for cluing me in on the possibility of broadcasting like this. Below are embeds of the talk, in three parts. There was a pre-Part 1 part which included Dorsky Museum curator Brian Wallace's opening statements, but that segment, unfortunately, was sans sound, so I've omitted it here. Feb 22, 2009 in Beacon: Lynne Cooke conversation with Zoe Leonard & Panel Talk at Van Brunt Gallery, which will be streamed live via MAYKRvision

Tomorrow at 12:30 at Dia:Beacon, Lynne Cooke will be in conversation with Zoe Leonard as part of the museum's Conversation series. Leonard's You See I am Here After All will be on exhibit through September 7, 2009. The talk is free with museum admission, however if you haven't made reservations already, I'm not sure you'll be able to get in on it.....The Merce Cunningham Dance Company is holding another duece of Events this weekend, but if you didn't grab up tickets some time ago, you're definitely s.o.l.

Another talk happening tomorrow is the panel talk on the expanding role of the artist in the 21 Century. The panel is happening at 3pm at Van Brunt Gallery. The subject of the talk is particularly timely considering the shifting state of the global economy, and that farting gash that has vented much of the hot air out of the artworld's bubble which has prompted speculation on the charactar of an altered artistic ecology that may shake out of the change.
The panel talk will be streamed online right here at MAYKR tomorrow, so you'll still be able to catch it if you can't make it in person - and you won't necessarily need to wear pants. Online viewers will be able to comment live during the discussion, and, if I'm on top of everything, questions will be relayed to the participating panelists:

The weekend that was..

I did more socializing this week than my hermititious self is equipped to deal with naturally.
The whirlwind started on Friday Evening at the Samuel Dorsky Museum at SUNY New Paltz.

On Saturday afternoon, I was back in the Habitat at Van Brunt Gallery, conversing with Steve Rossi (he has a new website) and watching him cast chewed bubble gum. Later that evening I stopped into Fovea in the middle of a talk given by Anthony Suau whose work is on exhibit. One day earlier, one of Suau's images was named as the World Press Photo of the Year for 2009.
Beacon was very much the global village all day as international types converged on the city for various events like the panel discussion on Burma at Mt Beacon Fine Art. I spoke a bit Isreali born Avner Levinson is exhibiting his sculptures at the Iron Fish Gallery. Go North was awash with Estonians of every shape and size, inlcuding various members of the Estonian Press for Marko Maetamm's opening at the gallery. A crush of people made their way down to the Hat Factory in Peekskill for the opening of For the Love of Art. It was a mob scene for a while, and I saw several of the same folks I saw in the previous two evenings, along with a lot of strangers. A highlight of the reception might have been the band kickin out jazzy intrumental renditions of power pop hits from the Eighties, like Eye of the Tiger and many other favs I can't remember.
I'll be posting more images shortly.....which reminds me, I'm several months behind on updating the flickr page. Everything in due time.

Progress Report: HFA Goes Inside at Van Brunt Gallery, through March 2

Here's a wee update on the HFA exhibit at Van Brunt Gallery.
Several days after the opening, the gallery was reconfigured as a workspace and exhibition space. For the past two weeks, participating artists....and anyone who wishes to be a participating artist have been in the space working on projects including. I've been spending Saturday afternoons in the gallery working.

A screening of John Sullivan's Hues of Hudson was followed by a discussion about the role of art in community took place this past Sunday.

The gallery configuration will be changing abain this week with construction starting on a new habitat in the space which will likely be installed in a semi permanent home after the exhibit.

Hues of Hudson screening and discussion at Van Brunt Gallery Feb 1, 3pm.

Hues of Hudson is a documentary video produced by and directed by John Sullivan about art and artists in the Hudson Valley. Sullivan produced the video this fall as a senior project at Marist. The video which can be found on youtube in two parts, features interviews with Carl Van Brunt, Sara Pasti, Simon Draper, Thomas Huber, Paul Smart, Michael Sabilia, Norm Magnusson, Benjamin Krevolin, Franc Palaia and Jose Acosta on the state of art in the Hudson Valley.
Van Brunt Gallery will be hosting a screening and a discussion of Hues of Hudson on Sunday at 3pm as part of the Habitat for Artists Goes Inside project which is occupying the gallery through March 2.

In Peekskill,HVCCA is hosting a series of poetry "performances" that respond directly to certain works on view currently as part of the Origins exhibit. Performances at 2pm and 6pm are planned on both Saturday and Sunday with a formal reception following the Saturday evening performance. This event is the second collaboration between the museum and the Hudson Valley Writers' Center.

3pm on Sunday afternoon will present a dilemma for some as there will be dueling talks happening at that time. I mentioned before, that Donald Alter will be giving a talk as part of his exhibit at the Garrison Art Center, in Garrison NY.
Here in Beacon NY, as part of the current Habitat For Artists exhibit, Van Brunt Gallery will be hosting a talk on solar energy given by the group Solar1- a green energy arts and education center in New York.

Habitat For Artists at Van Brunt Gallery Jan 17-March 2

Van Brunt Gallery Habitat will be hosting a Habitat For Artists project/exhibition beginning on January 17 and running through March 2. There will be an opening reception on Saturday from 6-9pm.
A whole host of folks are participating in this project, and more are invited to take part. Van Brunt's space will be both showroom, workspace, and social hub with a wide range of events planned for the through the run of the project. Participating artists will be working in the space and the public is invited to dig in and participate too. Think of it as a mini-mini residency. Participating artists include: Christopher Albert, Richard Bruce, Sharon Butler, Ryan Cronin, Kathy Feighery, Marnie Hillsley, Matthew Kinney, Grace Knowlton, Sara Mussen, Steven Rossi, Todd Sargood, Matthew Slaats, Lynn Stein, Dar Williams, Grey Zeien and Donald Kimmel and the Flying Swine Live Theater...and Simon Draper too.

Van Brunt Gallery's new digs.

Van Brunt Gallery christened its newer leaner self in its location on December 6 with the opening of a group show.

A favorite of the evening's was Karl Saliter's granite Tonka dump truck complete with rolling wheels lifting bed.

My pick of the show is this piece by Matt Harle (I don't know the title).

Van Brunt Gallery opens in new location, Dec 6, 2008

Van Brunt Gallery makes its Main St slide this week, opening the new space at 137 Main St. on Saturday, Dec 6 with a group show filled with a host of familiar gallery names: Colin Barclay, Gabe Brown, Richard Butler, Melanie Einzig, Lori Field, Barbara Friedman, Kate Hagerman, Matt Harle, Peter Iannarelli, Stevan Jennis, Stanford Kay, Norm Magnusson, Molly Rausch, Stephen Spaccarelli, Karl Saliter, Christie Scheele, George Sewell and Carl Van Brunt. The exhibit will run through Jan 5, and the opening is happening from 6-9pm on Saturday.
Another change for the gallery is that all exhibition announcements will be sent out via email only- no more stamplicking.
