Calls for Artists: The Big Draw + WOMS 2010

First, The Big Draw: a fundraising drawing extravaganza for the Beacon Open Studios 2010.  The Big Draw will be a drawing marathon, party and live auction.  A handful of exquisite corpse drawings created by notable Beaconites will be auctioned off and a broad wide selection of 6"x8" 2D works will be available for $40 each.  Artists will be on hand drawing throughout the evening.
Deadline for submitting 6"x8" works for thee event is May 23.  Artists whose 6x8's are sold will  receive 50% ($20) of the purchase price.
Artists will also be on hand creating drawings throughout the evening.  If you are interested in drawing during the event, or submitting a piece, check out the submission info & form  
This event is not restricted to Beacon artists.  Anyone from anywhere are invited to submit work.

Remember, Beacon Open Studios is taking place on Sept. 25 & 26.  Artists interested in participating can sign up for the low low price of $20 until June 5th at which point the fee will rise.
I can tell you that both members of the maykr household will be participating this year...since one of us will have just finished her MFA, and last year's installment was so successful.

Next, Windows on Main St is coming back for its sixth year.

Deadline for project proposal submissions is July 1.  As I understand it Ty Marshal has handed over his share of the reigns to Katy Peace, but  Melissa Tatge is still involved in the inner workings.  The exhibit will be taking place from August 14 to September 11.

Woodstock artist Peter Barrett exhibiting at Dorsch Gallery in Miami, and a call for artists from FLA.

I received a note last week from Tyler Emerson-Dorsch.  Tyler is co-owner with her husband Brook of the Dorsch Gallery in Miami.  One of the three exhibits currently on view at the gallery features the work of Woodstock artist Peter Barrett.  Tyler's note was my introduction to the broad and trippy work of Barrett. 

Coincidentally, on the same day and from a different source, I received a call for entries for an exhibit that Tyler is jurying at the art gallery at Broward College in Davie Fl.  This is a national call, open to artists 18 and over, for artwork interpreting the theme Vertigo.

Submission fee is $35 and the submission deadline has been extended to OCT 2.

COTA seeking artist submissions. Deadline Sept 10

COTA - Celabration of the Arts is a one day festival that fills areas of New Paltz will be happening this year on Saturday, October 10 from 11 to 5pm. 

Artists who would like to participate this year are invited to submit their work for consideration.  Deadline for submissions is Sept. 10, 2009.  Here's the skinny:

COTA(Celebration of the Arts), a fine and performing art event in New Paltz, NY, now in its third year is seeking proposals for site-specific installations that explore the rich history of Historic Huguenot Street and its relationship to the Hudson Valley. COTA is also seeking  proposals for artists to construct stations for a mini-golf course. Artists must construct a station that can be played as a mini-golf hole. These installations/sculptures will be installed on the street, which is the main thoroughfare that connects either lawn where the exhibition and activities tents will be located. Back home - July in Beacon

I returned from Germany on Friday night.  I finished up my initial offering in the 10x10x10 exhibit in Ellenville, in which I'm participating, and which opened last night.  I was in Ellenville briefly for the opening there, and since I've been wading through tiny waves of jet lag, I decided to forego Beacon's Second Saturday openings.

If you also were unable to attend any of the openings, here's a bit of what we both missed last night.

Zahra's is back with work by NUBS and Chris Machin in the Pinstripe Show.  Were not talking zoot suits or Vanessa Tellez's show describes the ethos of the the gallery at Zahra's personified by this exhibit: 

The rise of trendy hip bullshit art is rising by the second.  Lowbrow is in, so that means everyone is trying to cash in on any kind of street art or gritty conceptual trite.  We ain't gonna give you art done by a hipster that just decided the way to sell his paintings is to get in touch with his lowlife side.

Go North's new exhibit of collage and mixed media paintings by Jonathan Allen called Terminal Daydream.  A reading was scheduled prior to the opening featuring writers Chris O Cook, Greg Fuchs, Joe Millar, Chris Ross and Lauren Russell.

Floor One's new exhibit features the work of Josh Jenkins.

Open Space was planning for a massive caravan/happening/cook out for We Are Familia, the group exhibit that will run through Sept. 6.  The show features work by Holly Stevenson, Yoh Nagao, Peter Kienzle/Superette, Jesse Brown, Marc McAndrews, Hisham Bharoocha, Amy Rupple, Chris Yormick, Nightwood, SEEE.  Here's a rundown of the concept behind WE ARE FAMILIA.

I read on the BCN site yesterday that 400 square will be closing at the end of this month, and Hermitage has recently closed.  The guys at Go North announced in early May that they'll be closing at the end of this month as well...I'll have more on this soon.

It appears that a new shop/gallery called Dream in Plastic will be opening at the beginning of August at 177 Main St. The joint is accepting submissions for its first gallery exhibit in the space.  Analog will be on exhibit from August 8 through Sept. 7 and will feature images taken with a plastic camera.  Submission guidelines are on the blog.

Peekskill calls to younger artists

Kara Lenkeit is seeking submissions from "young" "emerging" Hudson Valley Artists artists in the 21 - 35ish range for a show at the Paramount Center in Peekskill which will run from July 24 to Aug 31.

Call for Artists: FORRENT

Much is made of the power of the creative class in kick starting economic growth of particular locales. Based on the concept posited by Richard Florida which is largely misunderstood and deformed by result oriented civic leaders, communities far and wide have sought to harness the power of art to attract visitors, lend a certain atmosphere, and hopefully spawn a cultural and economic growth.

What’s a community to do if it has no "art scene" to speak of, no apparent creative edge that might catch the eye of young creative individuals looking to relocate?

TORRENT, or FORRENT is a project that seeks to lend to those communities missing out on the avalanche of cash rolling in to communities awash in resident artists need not suffer in silence.

Your hapless community may not have the benefit of the economic engine of artists pulsing away, but the For Rent signs dressing the vacant storefronts along your Main St will make it look like you do.

Energetic, progressive young professionals looking relocate and start families will fall under the spell of you town with the knowledge they are on the leading edge of a movement in a burgeoning creative center.

TORRENT => FORRENT is part of a series of projects created by Christopher Albert as part of the 10x10x10 exhibit in Ellenville, NY.

Artists are invited to re-envision the FOR RENT sign as part of a storefront installation during a portion of the Ellenville exhibit and an ongoing web project.

Call for Artists: Hudson Valley Artists 2009 at the Dorsky Museum, New Paltz. Submission deadline April 17

The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art's annual exhibit of regional artists is coming around again this summer and submissions for consideration are being sought. This year's exhibit will feature work that explores connections between culture and environment.
Museum curator Brian Wallace will select approximately twenty artists/artist teams from the mid-Hudson Valley and organize an exhibition that will feature artwork, information, presentations, activities, and other projects that will connect global issues such as sustainability, ecological awareness, and bioethics to our immediate surroundings. The exhibit Hudson Valley Artists 2009: Ecotones and Transition Zones will be on view from June 13 - Sept. 6, 2009. Submission deadline is April 17. Key terms: intensive speciation and accelerated mutation; wide margins and slow transitions; thick thresholds and overlapping domains.

GUIDELINES/INFORMATION

The exhibition is open to all emerging and mid-career artists living in Ulster, Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan, Columbia, and Greene Counties who have not yet had a major one-person museum exhibition and who do not have an exclusive contract with a commercial gallery. Students are not eligible. There is no application fee.

Artists are invited to submit a maximum of six images of work created since the beginning of 2006. Traditional media as well as audio, video, film, etc. welcome. Brief proposals (100 words, 1-2 images) for new work, presentations, performances, etc., related to the exhibition are also welcome.

Slides or CDs equally welcome; VHS /DVD cued to a 2 minute sample accepted. For each work, clearly indicate artist’s name, artwork name, date, materials, and dimensions.

The submission package must include image captions, artist’s biography/CV, contact information, and SASE for return of materials. It may not be possible to review incomplete submissions. All materials will be returned.

Artists participating in the exhibition will be responsible for the delivery of selected works to the museum; works must be ready to install (proposed new works will be dealt with upon acceptance). Artists will also be responsible for the return of work at the end of the exhibition.

*One component of the exhibition, Habitat for Artists, will offer temporary studio space in repurposed structures in several locations in New Paltz; if you would like more information as it becomes available, put "HFA" and your contact information, including email, on a separate sheet.

Upcoming calls for artists

Matthew Higgs, chief curator at White Columns, is the juror for the 2009 Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Annual. Artists living within a 100 mile radius of the Capital Region are invited to submit works to be considered. The exhibit will be held from June 25-Aug. 8. Postmark deadline for submissions is March 25.

Walkway on the Hudson in Poughkeepsie is seeking artists to create emblems and facilitate flag making workshops in which flags representing cities and town along the Hudson will be created and used in a processional that will mark the official opening of the pedestrian bridge spanning the river in Poughkeepsie. GAS in Poughkeepsie holds call for artists

GAS in Poughkeepsie is hosting an open call for work for the Stimulus Package Show. A hanging fee per piece will apply. The exhibition runs from Feb 21 through Mar 29. Drop off dates for artwork are Feb 21 & 22, 12-6pm.
GAS is also reviewing work to be exhibited in month long shows in the new Project Room.

As the WOrMS Turns

After four years of organizing the Windows on Main St. project, Karlos Carcamo and I are passing the torch to whomever may want to pick it up.
KC and I instigated the project in 2005 as a way for artists to interact with the local environment, merchants and inhabitants of Beacon's Main St. We also envisioned the exhibition as an artist driven open source project that would shift in its form according to whomever is involved in developing the current incarnation of it.
In these four years, we've received an incredible level of interest and participation on behalf of our local merchants. We've also enjoyed the financial support of BACA, the Dutchess County Arts Council, The Community Foundation, and Rhinebeck Savings Bank.
We've been able to facilitate some great moments for the participating artists and, I believe, for street bound viewers. I have very much appreciated the ways in which my experience of Main St. has been altered or informed by the projects that been done. I've said several times before that my perception of this project is that it's an intimate endeavor. For me, the exhibition is summed up in the singular chance encounter between passerby and artwork at that very moment in the viewer's day in that very spot along the viewer's path. WOMS is also about the artist and business person who may become just a little more familiar with one another through the host/collaboration experience.
Karlos and I have spoken about taking the project into a fifth year, but at this moment, we feel that the moment is beyond ready for some new custodianship. I think these four years have been a good start and I hope someone will be willing to pick it up and explore new aspects of engaging our immediate surroundings in creative exchanges.

The Pelham Art Center in Pelham is accepting submissions for the bi-annual painting competition, the Alexander Rutsch Award and Solo Exhibition. It is a juried award and the winner receives $5,000 and a solo show at the Art Center.

Beacon's new official website needs your photos

A revamped version of the city of Beacon's official website is currently being developed. Randall Martin is acting in the role of volunteer "photo editor" for the site's photographic content, and he's looking for content from the public. Here are a few details the project and what kind of material is being sought:

I'm volunteering with a team of people to revamp the official City of Beacon
website. This is another no-budget project. I have been dubbed "photo editor"
and have been charged with the responsibility of finding local photographers who
may want to donate interesting iconic images of Beacon to be included on a slide
show on the home page.
There will also be themed galleries, ongoing changing
feature stories that will need to be illustrated and events calendars.
There will
also be links to contributor' s websites and/or contact info. Let me know if you'd
be interested either now or in the future. "Now" means before Thanksgiving. If you
know someone else who might be helpful you could let me know.
Examples of images we are looking for:

Firstly: While beautifully decaying buildings make nice subjects for photography, we have determined that decay is inappropriate for this municipal website.

Looking for Non-Snapshot / Heightened / Artsy versions of:

Call for Entries: Samual Dorsky Museum

The annual regional juried exhibit at the Samuel Dorsky Museum is coming around again. The Museum is accepting artist submissions for the Hudson Valley Artists Series 2008: The Medium is the Message. bCOOP seeks submissions for evening of Feb 9

I spaced out posting this earlier. (It happens.) Below are a few more details. If you're interested in more information, contact Frank at the phone and email above, or visit the bCOOP website.

We are initiating a Co-Op art show in Beacon, N.Y. There will be a small hanging fee of approx. $25.00 per piece of art work which will go towards expenses of the Beacon COOP . A second piece could be exhibited for an additional $15.00

After January 15, 2008, the fee may be raised to $35. 00 or $40.00 per piece since space is limited. The Art Co-Op will get approximately a 30 per cent commission on sales, one half of which would be donated to a GREEN organization. The other seventy percent will go to the artist.
One piece could be very reasonably priced and the other could be an expensive piece to show ones style, expertise,etc. The theme could be GREEN or a favorite piece of art by the individual artist.

The date we are shooting for to open the Art Co-Op is the second Saturday in February. You do not have to be present to participate in the show but we encourage you to be there to network and enjoy the festivities.

Do you know of the Beacon art community? If not, it is the home of the internationally known DIA Gallery and many other shops and galleries. We might also be able to combine this event with a visit to DIA. At the event, we are planning a pot luck reception. For those that donate like to cook, a small donation towards some store bought goodies would be appreciated.

made in advance. For New York City exhibitors art work may be dropped off

WELCOME MURAL - BEACON, NY
The Beacon Arts Community Association (BACA) seeks proposals for wall art to serve as a
Welcome Gateway to Beacon’s Main Street to be sited on the side of a highly visible building located at the corner of Main Street and Route 9D.

The wall art will be located on the brick wall directly above the outdoor terrace of the Muddy Cup Coffeehouse, 129 Main Street. The wall art will be created as a digital print on vinyl from an image provided by the selected artist. It will be mounted on the wall for at least one year and no longer than 3. The final dimensions of the wall art will be 16 feet wide x 26 feet high. The selected wall art will be installed by art installers working for BACA.

Peter Iannarelli has brought to my attention a craig's list item announcing, yet another gallery in Beacon.
The gallery scheduled to open this month is called Mount Beacon Fine Art, and it is seeking artists to submit portfolios to fill out the exhibition schedule. I found a second listing on Craig's list detailing the offerings of of private art instruction at the gallery.

The first question that comes to my head when I hear of something new opening is, will this space add to a possible conversation on art? or will it be another in a line of gallery boutiques in town, or Goutiques-that's a frase I coined just this very second.

You've just witnessed yet another tiny growth in the body of the english language.




In fact in just this very moment, I have coined the frase, Goutique.

The newly formed Beacon Art Salon is organizing a city-wide open studio event scheduled for June 9th.

Call For Entries: Uncanny Hudson Valley at the Samuel Dorsky Museum

The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art is pleased to invite
emerging and mid-career artists living in Ulster, Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan,
Columbia, and Greene Counties to submit artwork documentation for this summer's
Hudson Valley Artists 2007: The Uncanny Valley, opening Saturday, June 23 with a
reception from 6 - 8:00 p.m. The exhibition will continue through September
9, 2007.

This year's exhibition takes as its theme the "uncanny” that
sense of unease brought on by contact with an image or thing at once familiar
and strange. Museum curator Brian Wallace will review all work submitted in
response to this call and organize an exhibition of recent artwork from diverse
viewpoints and including a wide range of media that explores psychological,
perceptual, historical, and literary aspects of the uncanny. Wallace
notes, "As I've familiarized myself with work by artists identified with the
region ranging from the anonymous (to us) early residents of the area to
19th-century painter Ralph Albert Blakelock to former resident Gary Hill to
contemporary photographer and Catskill resident Susan Wides (whose work was on
view at the SDMA last fall), I've come to realize that there's something both
strange and strangely familiar about this part of the world and about much of
the artwork made here, whether or not it responds directly to the physical
landscape. I hope my curiosity about this sense of the uncanny resonates with
emerging and established artists in this area: I look forward to the chance to
review documentation of art in all media (photography, painting, video, sound,
installation, sculpture, etc.) submitted in response to this call for
work." Artists are invited to submit documentation of up to six (6)
works created within the past five years: all media painting, photography,
sculpture, installation, printmaking as well as audio, video, digital, film,
etc. The Uncanny Valley is open to professional artists who have not yet had a
major one-person museum show and are not currently represented by a commercial
gallery. Students and employees of SUNY New Paltz are not eligible.

Call for proposals: Yonkers garbage trucks

JMC Art Partners/Segal Fine Arts, NY, NY are seeking proposals
to create unique designs to transform garbage trucks into "mobile art
galleries". These trucks will be a fun, attractive"vehicle" to promote
environmental awareness and educate the public aboutthe importance of sustaining
a clean and safe environment. Six designswill be selected and printed on outdoor
vinyl and wrapped around the bodyand cab of each truck. This project is being
undertaken by the City of Yonkers' Office of Economic Development. The Art
Trucks will be launchedat Business Week in May 2007.
