Yep, that would be them, Angelika Rinnhofer and Billy Name.

Angelika and I visited the home of Billy Name last week to have a chat with that man of myth for the Dead Hare Radio Hour.

A selection of Billy's photographs from his days documenting life in Warhol's Factory are currently on view at the Albert Shahinian Fine Art in Rhinebeck, NY ( 22 E Market St.) through May 22.  Billy will be giving a talk at the gallery on Saturday April 30th during a reception taking place from 5-8pm.  These particular photos on exhibit were originally included in an exhibit curated by Emma Lavigne entitled "I Am A Cliche - Echoes of the Punk Aesthetic" which was part of the 41st Rencontres D'Arles Photography event last year.

I'll be capturing audio from Billy's talk which I expect will join portions of our conversation with him last week for the radio show. 

 Considering he's the man responsible for making the Silver Factory silver, I couldn't resist snapping a few images of the shiny-backed insulation on Billy's back porch, from which one can see the Mid Hudson Bridge, the color of which he claims inspired the choice of decor for Warhol's studio.

Observing the Loss of two carriers of our sight onto the world.

Our friends at Fovea are among those mourning the deaths of two photojournalists in Libya yesterday.  Chris Hondros and Tim Hetherington died yesterday after when a mortar hit a group of international journalists traveling with rebel soldiers in Misrata, Libya.  According to the Wall Street Journal, another photographer, Guy Stevens, along with seven rebel fighters and a Ukranian physician were also killed in the attack.  Initially, Hondros had injured in the attack and died later in the day.Another photographer, Guy Stevens was injured and in stable condition.

 As can be seen in the second twitter link above, Hondros had filed photos of rebel fighters making fighting and moving through and occupying building earlier in the day.
Chris Hondros' work, along with that of Todd Heisler and Suzanne Opton was featured in Fovea's second exhibition entitled, It's Our War,  in 2007 and all three photographers partook in a panel discussion held in conjunction with the exhibit.

Cultural omnivores dilemma: Saturday June 27

There's there will be a lot of offerings vying  for your attention on Saturday.  Here's a sampling:

In addition to the first installment of it's series of professional development workshops held in collaboration with the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Dia:Beacon will also be holding a Gallery talk at 1pm.  Robert Lubar will be discussing the work of Antoni Tapies.

Jaanika Peerna will be on hand from 3-6pm to discuss her current exhibit, Traces of a Sweet Connect at Go North.

Van Brunt Gallery is having an opening for part duex of its Quad show which will be on view in the gallery proper and in the second floor gallery at Hudson Beach glass and at Moxie.   This group exhibit  features the work of Colin Barclay, Richard Bruce, Richard Butler, Bo Gehring, Tadashi Hashimoto, David Loeb and Stephen Niccolls.  The reception starts at 6pm.  The exhibition runs through July 27.

One of the Hessel Museum's Franz West sculptures (Blue Couch) has been relocated on the

roof of the museum by Rachel Harrison.

The Hessel Museum at Bard College will be holding an opening reception for Consider The Lobster and Other Essays, a duo exhibitions, the first is a survey of the work of Rachel Harrison and the second is a curatorial collaboration between Harrison and Nayland Blake, Alan Ruppersburg, Harry Dodge, Tom Burr and Andrea Zittel in which works of the artists are installed amongst selections from the museum's permanent collection.  The opening reception is happening from 1 to 5pm.  As usual, a chartered bus will be bringing visitors up from NYC and returning them after the opening.  For more email ccs@bard.edu.  The exhibits will remain on view through December 20, 2009.

The Center for Photography in Woodstock is hosting a talk by Elinor Carucci starting at 8pm.  This talk looks very interesting I'm not certain if the maykr team will be able to attend, but we're currently in discussion about our plans for that day.  Carruci's work is jarring, dramatic and I'd like to hear her speak about it. Tickets for the talk are $7, $5 for students and members.  Contact CPW to make reservations and to check for availability. 

Dar Williams will be performing a benefit concert for ecoartspace and Habitat for Artists in at the McKenna Theater at SUNY New Paltz.  The show starts at 7:30 Tix are $25 ($30 at the door) call 845.257.3844 for info.

Photographer Linda Connor speaking tonight in Woodstock, 8pm

If you've ever dreamed of spending the evening with Linda Connor, your dreams are coming true this evening courtesy of the Center of Photography at Woodstock. CPW is hosting "An evening with Linda Connor" in which the photographer will show and speak about her work.

Linda Connor has taught at the San Francisco Art Institute for over 35 years. The most consistent element in Connor’s work is the making of photographs that are iconic and that honor her subject. Using tools reminiscent of 19th century landscape photography, Connor’s images reflect the poetry and mystery of place and contemplate the relationship of the sacred to the natural world.

Connor’s work has been internationally exhibited at venues including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, National Gallery of Art, Haines Gallery and Paul Kopeikin Gallery.

Her photographs are published in seven monographs including "On the Music of the Spheres", "Spiral Journey", and most recently "Odyssey" by Chronicle Books.

Linda is the recipient of three National Endowment for the Arts grants, as well as a Guggenheim Fellowship, and her work is included in collections at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, the George Eastman House, the Getty, and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

CPW hosts lecture by Platon, May 30, 8pm

Platon: President Vladimir Putin
The Center for Photography at Woodstock is hosting a lecture by renowned portrait photographer, Platon.

Based in NYC based, Platon was born in London, attended the esteemed St. Martin’s School of Art before going on to study at the Royal College of Art, where he earned his BA and MA. In 1992 he received British Vogue’s “Best Up-and-Coming Photographer” which included the opportunity to contribute images to the magazine.

Since then Platon has continued to shoot for an impressive range of publications including The New York Times Magazine, Time, Esquire, and Rolling Stone. His advertising credits include memorable campaigns for Issey Miyake, Nike, Levi’s, Moschino, IBM, and Motorola. Platon has exhibited at Hamilton’s Gallery and in London, Spiral Hall in Tokyo, Leica Gallery in NYC and Japan, Saatchi Gallery, and the Carla Sozzani Gallery in Milan.

Phaidon Press published his latest book, Platon’s Republic. His work is represented by the Art Department in NYC.

Platon's talk will take place on May 30 at 8pm.

Angelika Rinnhofer on the move

Beacon photographer, Angelika Rinnhofer is currently included in two group exhibitions in Woodstock NY.
On exhibit through October 23 at the Center for Photography at Woodstock, the Inaugural Regional Triennial of Photographic Arts features three images from Rinnhofer's most recent Martyr series.

Also in Woodstock, Rinnhofer is featured in "Portrait," a group show curated by Beacon artist, Carol March. "Portrait is on exhibit until October 30 at the Kleinart/James Art Center.

Angelika is also being represented by KBP at Photo New York on Oct 6-9, at Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 West 18th St in Manhattan.

Angelika will be curating an exhibit of 3 photographers from Light Work in Syracuse NY at bau in Oct.
