Electronic Music: Powered by Girls Workshop at Ann Street Gallery in Newburgh, March 13

On March 13 the Ann St Gallery in Newburgh NY will be hosting a free workshop on creating electronic music for girls aged 13-18.  Suzanne Thorpe and Bonnie Jones, both electronic music artists will conduct the afternoon long workshop called Electronic Music: Powered by Girls (1-5pm) which will be followed by a public concert performed by Thorpe and Jones at 8pm.

Free weekend admission to Dia:Beacon for Beacon residents All-Year-Long

Beginning Saturday, Oct 17, Dia:Beacon will begin offering year round free weekend museum admission to residents of Beacon NY.

This new initiative, made possible by Lyn and John Fishback in honor of Pete Seeger will kick off on the 17th with a celebration with refreshments, a performance by Pete Seeger and adult and family tours.  It all starts at 11:30, here's the schedule:

11:30 am   -  Refreshments

12:00 pm   -  Welcome Remarks & Performance by Pete Seeger

1:00   pm   -  Adult and family tours of Dia:Beacon, Riggio Galleries

2:00   pm   -  Line, Rythm, Chance, a guided family activity in the museum's Learning Lab.

                     open to children 6 and above accompanied by an adult.

Beacon residents simply need to present a driver's license or other government-issued ID for free entry to the museum.

Additionally, the final Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts Workshop to be held at Dia:Beacon will take place on that same day at 2pm.  The topic for this last session is Considering the Fiscal Sponsorship Model to Structure and Support Art Projects. More Dia:Beacon news: 

Advance tickets for the first stage of Trisha Brown Dance Co. performances on Nov 14 & 15 are on sale for Dia members.  Tickets go on sale to the general public on Oct 15.  General admission to the performance is $35 and includes museum admission.  Dia member tickets are $20.

The St Luke's Chamber Ensemble is kicking off a new concert series at Dia:Beacon beginning on Oct 18.

The Antoni Tapies exhibit will be closing in the coming weeks.  I believe that an installation of Agnes Martin works will follow the Tapies show.

On Saturday, Oct 24, at 1pm, Allstar gallery talk giver Kenneth Goldsmith will be returning to give a talk on Sol LeWitt. Not to put too much pressure on Mr Goldsmith, but this better be good, because (based on his Warhol talk) I've been really building up this talk in my mind....That usually doesn't bode well for my own personal endeavors, so I hope he will fare better than I tend to in light of my own preassumed excellence.

Finally Finally, winter is coming and with it come shorter days and with those shorter days come shorter hours at Dia:Beacon.  On Oct 22, the museum will be open Thurs-Mon 11-4pm. On Nov 13 the museum will be open Fri-Mon 11-4pm.

Autumn exhibits and workshops at Pelham Art Center, Pelham NY.

The Pelham Art Center, in Pelham has kindly sent me information on their upcoming programs.

First, and update:  Back in December of '08, I posted a notice about the PAC's 2009 Alexander Rutsch Painting Award.  This year's prize was awarded to Tracy Miller.   Miller's paintings are psychadelic dreams of beer, cigs and sweets, but what really caught my interest when looking at her website are her cakemaking endeavors.

In September, PAC will be hosting two concurrent exhibits of abstract works in painting and drawing.  The first is a solo show; Squared Off- Workds on Paper by Elizabeth Goldman:

This is a solo exhibition of abstract artworks that are a hybrid of painting and drawing. It is also the first exhibit to take place in the Art Center's renovated gallery. In her most recent works, Ms. Goldman introduces quasi-geometric forms superimposed onto a gestural surface. By working in layers, Ms. Goldman allows the work to evolve, creating an almost invisible history with marks and materials. The tension on the canvas comes not from what is seen but what is not seen.

The second exhibit is a group show featuring the paintings of three artists.  Same River Twice includes the work of Josh Willis, Lauren Portada and Bradley Fesmire:

Josh Willis’s miniature paintings can be viewed as either discrete works or part of a larger series of paintings. Developed from the outside-in, the artist first establishes how many canvases, and what size and shape they will take. Imagery is characterized by an impression of a figure in the landscape, as a reference to the “figure in a landscape” as represented in landscape painting and as a connection to the artist’s place of origin. Lauren Portada describes her paintings as recordings focused on the intimacy of the landscape. Inspired by travel, observation, and nature photography, they reflect her concern with the natural world and the expansion of historical landscape painting, deciphering the connection between the landscape and history, viewer and object, chronicled events and time. Bradley Fesmire’s process involves wooden panels that are carved, most often with a router, to allow for a direct relation with the material and experience. The router acts as paintbrush, eraser and in the artist’s words, a metaphor for time, engraining his ideas into the surface of the work, with a tinge of melancholy.

Both exhibits open on September 11 and run through October 31.

On September 19th, the PAC will be hosting a Korean Folk Arts Day highlighting traditional Korean music and dance featuring performances by Minji Kim and Jung Hee Ho.  The program is will take place from 1:30 - 3:30 and is free to the general public.

The PAC will also be collaborating with the Hudson Valley Writers Center on a series of writing workshops for and a reading for adults in October and January.  Registration for thoseworkshops is open now.  Information can be found at the HV Writer's center website , and on the PAC website, along with information on the center's other art education programs.

A Workshop for Artists and Art Organizations
The Dutchess County Arts Council, the Center for Research, Regional Education and Outreach (CRREO) along with the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art (SDMA) at the State University of New York at New Paltz will host a program for artists and arts organizations throughout the region, titled "Developing Shared Marketing Tools and Other Ways to the Tourist Market in the Hudson Valley." 

The Workshop will be held on **THURSDAY** , July 16, 2009; 5:30pm-7:30pm at Locust Grove Estate at 2683 South Road (Route 9) inPoughkeepsie, New York. The museum comprises more than 9,000 square feet of exhibition space distributed over six galleries. The SDMA is one of the largest museums within the SUNY system.

Dia, Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts host Professional Devlopment Workshops for artists

Dia:Beacon, in partnership with the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts will be hosting a three part series of Professional Development Workshops beginning on June 27 with a session on Copyright Law. The series, Art Law - after Conceptual Art, in the Digital Age, and during Lean Times.
Each of the classes will be held at Dia:Beacon Riggio Galleries and will be taught by Sergio Muñoz, Associate Director of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, NYC.
Admission is $10 per class which includes museum admission. Members of Dia, the Dutchess County Arts Council, and Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, NYC are free.

In a timely bit of synchronicity, the radio program Studio 360 recently ran a feature in which correspondent Mark Phillips, inspired by seeing Sol LeWitt's installation of wall drawings at Dia:Beacon, decided to create a version of his own in his apartment. The episode explores the idea of copyright and ownership in relation to conceptual art and includes Phillips' conversation with Lacey Fekishazy's critiqued his work.
The episode show page features a slide show of images showing the LeWitt installation of Wall Drawing 1211 at Mass MOCA, and Phillip's rendition over the rumpled sheets of his bed.

Workshop on writing artist statements at HVCCA in Peekskill, April 19 at 10am
