This week, the Dead Hare Radio Hour visits NADA Hudson, billed as a non art fair/sculpture installation held in Hudson on July 30 and 31, 2011 at the Basilica Hudson.

Sarah Anderson Lock, artist and Executive Director of Rural Projects has joined Dead Hare Radio as a contributor.  She has already been a part of the show's 18th episode (a round table discussion of recent NYFA Mark Program alums) and the 19th episode in which she journeys to Manchester, England to speak with members of the Owl Project.

Matthew, Sarah and I start off the show with our impressions of what we saw.  Then we proceed to hear the sounds of NADA Hudson.  I conducted short interviews with the following folks:

Benjamin Tischer of Invisible Exports and Invisible Exports' featured artist Philip Von Zweck who was creating on demand editioned photocopies of artwork by other artists through the run of the weekend.

Some uppery-state goings on.

The NADA (New Art Dealers Alliance) event this weekend at the Basilica in Hudson, NY.  The exhibit that features the participation of many galleries is being described as a " a site-specific project" and not an art fair.

The event is happening this weekend, Sat & Sun from 11-6pm.  A slate of performances is scheduled on both days, check the NADA website for details and a list of participating galleries.   There are also some "after hour" events happening on Saturday evening including a reception taking place at Club Helsinki.

...And if you happen to be up in that area, the Thompson Giroux Gallery is inaugurating a new space in Chatham, NY with an opening reception for a group show on Saturday, July 30 (4-7pm).  Artists featured in this exhibit are:  Peter Acheson, Rick Birkett, Claude Carone, Dan Devine, Carol Mangan, Melissa Sarris, Arthur Sordillo, Marion Vinot.  The gallery is located at 57 Main St, Chatham, NY 12037.

Reeling it in: March bookended

My virtual desk is piled high and spilling over with items I've meant to post, but have missed, like the slide slam that was held last night (March 31) at the Rosendale Theater. The slide slam was sponsored by the Women's Studio Workshop and consisted of 20 artists, some of whom are currently visiting artists in residence at WSW and others selected by three guest curators (Brian Wallace, Emily Putoff, Mimi Graminski ) and who each had 5 minutes to show and discuss their artwork. Deb Davidowits, Peter Iannarelli and Simon Draper were among the participating artists which also included Tricia Wright, Arthur Hash, Itty Neuhaus-Schuck, Anat Shiftan, Rena Leinberger, Jennifer Swenson, Elena Sniezak, Joy Taylor, Johanne Renbeck, Bibiana Huang Matheis, Tilly Strauss, Mimi Graminski, Emily Puthoff, Ellen Kucera Amanda Kalinoski and Ruth Wetzel. By the accounts I've received, it was a real whirlwind.
Earlier in the Month, (March 7) a trip down down to the city was bookended by visits to Pulse, which had a bunch of art, most of which I didn't have the energy to see, and a visit to Volta, which I enjoyed more.
I headed down to the Habitat for Artists installation at Ecoartspace project space in SOHO....HFA has also gotten recent attention online at Daily Green.com, Shedworking, and a video interview with Chuck Leavell on the Mother Nature Network.

From SOHO, I headed up to the Art Blogger panel discussion at Denise Bibro Fine Art. The panel was organized by Olympia Lambert, was moderated by Joanne Mattera, and was populated by Hrag Vartanian, Roberta Fallon and Libby Rosof, Bill Gusky and Brent Burket. The panel discussion was held as part of the Blogpix exhibit at the Bibro's Platform Project Space. The talk offered me the opportunity to finally meet Martin Bromirski in person. Martin has the distinction of a: maintaining an entertaining, photo laden blog for several years without actually having a computer of his own, and b: being defriended by Jerry Saltz on Facebook. Martin introduced me to Bill Gusky who upon learning I'm from Beacon said "Oh, so you get to visit Dia anytime you want." "Yeah" I said, "it's great." "Actually, I was being sarcastic." oh.

Fair Deal

The fairs are in full swing now down in New York and I'm going to head down tomorrow to sample a few things. I'm particularly interested in checking out Rune Olsen's project at Samson Projects at Volta. I'm hoping to make it over to Pulse as well, but my stamina and my interest just ain't what it used to be.
Of local interest, Jaanika Peerna will be participating in the Broad Thinking Curatorial Project at Bridge.
Over at the Armory Show, Stockholm's Wetterling Gallery will be presenting work by Mike and Doug Starn including recent pieces that relate to their Big Bambu project in Beacon. Armory VIP visitors will be able to view the installation in Tallix's former building in Beacon on Sunday, March 8

Also happening tomorrow, the newly opened NY station of Ecoartspace is hosting an exhibit of the Habitat for Artists project. The space will be open tomorrow from 12-6. Ecoartspace is located at 53 Mercer St., 3rd Floor.
Sharon L. Butler, who I'm sure will be at the Artblogger Panel recently referenced Ecoartspace and the Habitat project in her guest post on the Art 21 blog.

Artists' mixer to be held in New Paltz on Monday

In a recent post, I mentioned COTA. There will be a mixer hosted this Monday, Aug 4 beginning at 6 pm at the Water Street Market in New Paltz as a prelude to the one day multidisciplinary art fair taking part on Sept 27. Applications are being taken through Aug 27th for artists who want to participate in COTA.

Fair and relevant

Apropos of my previous post on the cancellation of the Sitelines Art Fair, this week's Bad at Sports podcast (Episode 138) features an interview with Kavi Gupta and Christian Viveros-Faune from the Next Art Fair which is happening in Chicago this week.
In the discussion, Gupta and Viveros-Faune discuss their vision of Next as an event that transcends the trade show paradigm and which has specific relevance to a place and a moment.

I've been waiting for a reason to use this photo.
Karlos is participating in two events this week with Dean Project. From March 20-May 10, his work will be part of a preview of "Exporting Pop; A Western Fantasy" a group exhibition curated exclusively for the Kuwait Art Foundation Limited, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The exhibition will be on exhibit in Dubai from Sept 25 to Nov 8. A reception for the exhbition preview will be held on Sat, March 29 from 6-9 at the gallery, 45-43 21 St Long Island City (adjacent to PS 1)

Karlos' work will also be featured at the Dean Project booth (booth #21) at the Scope Art Fair at Lincoln Center beginning today and run Sunday.

Ahh Spring & Fair Weather

Storm King opens for its 2008 season on April 1st. There is no exhibition information for this year on the Storm King's website, but Tyler Green has reported that the Center will be hosting an exhibit of Sol LeWitt sculpture beginning on May 14.

This year, the coming of Spring also means the onset of NYC Art Fair Week, and the Armory Show is charging $30 for entry. Whawa wHa What? But, if you get nine or more of your friends together as a group, tix are just $15. I would hope someone would stage a group formation booth outside of the show where people could gather together, and once the requisite 10 heads were assembled, the ad hoc group could enter the show, and demand the group rate.
Also on the dockets for the dates of March 27-30: Bridge - $10, Scope - $15, Pulse - $15, Volta - $10, Art Now (has a fancy website, and a nice map showing proximity to Volta and Red Dot, but no admission price info.), Red Dot - $12, DiVA - free (runs from today through the 30th)

Rinnhofer represented at Pulse Miami

Angelika Rinnhofer's artwork will be represented by Paul Kopeikin Gallery at Pulse Miami from December 1-4.
