This week, the Dead Hare Radio Hour visits NADA Hudson, billed as a non art fair/sculpture installation held in Hudson on July 30 and 31, 2011 at the Basilica Hudson.

Sarah Anderson Lock, artist and Executive Director of Rural Projects has joined Dead Hare Radio as a contributor.  She has already been a part of the show's 18th episode (a round table discussion of recent NYFA Mark Program alums) and the 19th episode in which she journeys to Manchester, England to speak with members of the Owl Project.

Matthew, Sarah and I start off the show with our impressions of what we saw.  Then we proceed to hear the sounds of NADA Hudson.  I conducted short interviews with the following folks:

Benjamin Tischer of Invisible Exports and Invisible Exports' featured artist Philip Von Zweck who was creating on demand editioned photocopies of artwork by other artists through the run of the weekend.

Some uppery-state goings on.

The NADA (New Art Dealers Alliance) event this weekend at the Basilica in Hudson, NY.  The exhibit that features the participation of many galleries is being described as a " a site-specific project" and not an art fair.

The event is happening this weekend, Sat & Sun from 11-6pm.  A slate of performances is scheduled on both days, check the NADA website for details and a list of participating galleries.   There are also some "after hour" events happening on Saturday evening including a reception taking place at Club Helsinki.

...And if you happen to be up in that area, the Thompson Giroux Gallery is inaugurating a new space in Chatham, NY with an opening reception for a group show on Saturday, July 30 (4-7pm).  Artists featured in this exhibit are:  Peter Acheson, Rick Birkett, Claude Carone, Dan Devine, Carol Mangan, Melissa Sarris, Arthur Sordillo, Marion Vinot.  The gallery is located at 57 Main St, Chatham, NY 12037.

Sharon Butler exhibits Beacon Paintings at John Davis Gallery in Hudson, May 28-June 21

Sharon L. Butler will be among the artists exhibiting in the next exhibit at the John Davis Gallery in Hudson. During the Summer season, in addition to the main gallery space, Davis opens up the four story carriage house in the back as an annex.
Sharon who lives in Connecticut will be exhibiting work that developed from her time working at the Habitat for Artists enclave at Spire Studios last Summer. Here's her statement for this exhibit:

Beacon Paintings

For four months last summer, I spent Mondays in Beacon, NY, working quietly in a solitary 4' x 5' shack. I had heard of a project called "Habitat for Artists" from Chris Albert, a blogger I met during the Blogger Conference at the Red Dot Fair back in March. "Habitat For Artists" was organized by artist Simon Draper, who built twelve small sheds on the grounds of Spire Studios and invited a group of artists to use them for the summer. Traveling to Beacon was more time-consuming than working in one stationary location, and I painted less on days spent there. But by expanding my world, the shack helped enrich my work.

At the beginning of the summer, I was entering a transitional phase, unsure where I was going but confident that the discipline of daily practice would lead somewhere. Though known mainly for Flavin, Lewitt, and Serra's resolutely intellectual brand of minimalism, Dia:Beacon, just a few blocks from my little shack, was featuring installations by colorists Blinky Palermo and Imi Knoebel, which impelled me to consider color more intensely than I ever had before. As the summer unfolded in my shack, I extended the limited, austere palette I'd been using for years to include the entire spectrum.

This series of small paintings is the result of my time spent in Beacon. Their scale, handmadeness, and intuitive form constitute an emotive and spontaneous counterpoint to the cerebral and exhaustive exploration of mathematical and geometric constructs and the meticulous experimentation with industrial materials predominantly showcased at Dia.

Sharon will be exhibiting her work on the fourth floor and she'll be joined in the carriage house by EJ Hauser, Molly Herman. Sculpture by Mary Ellen Scherl will be in the garden, and Rosanna Bruno will be in the main gallery. John Davis Gallery is located at 362 1/2 Warren St in Hudson. The exhibits run from May 28 to June 21. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, May 30 from 6-8pm.

Here are some images I shot of the carriage house last November when I went up to Hudson to see Martin Bromirski's exhibit Circus on Mars. This Summer space is incredible; full of character and atmosphere. It's a great environment to see work, and it's re-purposed, rustic nature serves as a suitable analog to the habitat environment that spawned the works Sharon is showing.

This cot and the Danger sign were both on the same floor as Martin's work. The presence of these two items added a whole "it rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again" vibe to Martin's slash and glitter alien show.

Abenteuer im Ausland

Deborah Davidowits is among four artists featured in Upstate, a group show of accomplished artists living in the area opening tonight (April 18) and running through May 23 at Nicole Fiacco Gallery in Hudson. The other artists participating in the show are Susan Wides, Robert The and Joyce Robins. The opening reception is happening tonight from 6-8pm. Nicole Fiacco Gallery is located at 336 Warren St.

Karlos Carcamo is currently taking part in two exhibitions in New York. The first which opened on April 7 and will remain on view through April 25 is The Pleasure Seekers, curated by Dan Halm. The Pleasure Seekers can be seen at the chashama Times Square Gallery at 112 W 44th St. The second exhibit, \'flo\: art, text, new media at The Center of Book Arts is curated by Rocio Aranda-Alvarado. The exhibit which includes work by artists "all of whom engage in the concept of 'flow' - how text and image move and interfuse", opened on April 15 and will remain on view through June 27. An artist talk will be held on May 27 at 6:30 pm with Dahlia Elsayed, Jessica Lagunas, Cifford Owens and Robin Price. The Book Arts Center is located at 28 W 27 St, 3rd floor.

The Anne Street Gallery is hosting an artist lecture today at 2pm given by Bill Justin, a self taught folk artist and found object sculptor, as part of the gallery's current Art Brut exhibit on view through today. The Anne Street Gallery is located at 104 Anne Street in Newburgh.

Steven Evans, Dia Assistant Director for Beacon has curated an exhibit opening tomorrow at the Dorsky Gallery Curatorial Programs in Long Island City. Other Voices, Other Rooms brings together work by Max Cole, Marcia Hafif, Winston Roeth, David Simpson and Fred Sandback. An opening reception will be held on April 19 from 2 - 5pm. The exhibit will remain on view through June 28. Exhibition information is enclosed in this brochure. Dorsky Gallery Curatorial Programs is located at 11-03 45 Ave, Long Island City.

Today at 2pm, the Garrison Art Center is hosting an opening reception for its annual exhibit Site (School Invitational Themed Exhibit). The exhibit features work created by students throughout the area who range in age from kindergarten to high school in the area and includes work from Beacon High School and the Beacon Community Center's After School Program. The exhibit will remain on view through April 26.

In Yonkers this weekend, the YOHO Artist Studios complex is holding its annual open house. The open studios will be happening today and tomorrow from 12-5pm.

Finally, a project proposal by Jill Reynolds and Dan Spitzer is one of four that have reached the final stage of consideration for commissioning as a permenant public art piece in the lobby of a business tower in Pittsburgh PA. The chosen project will be announced on April 24. Schematics of the four contending proposals accompanies this article about the competition.

Marking Time opening tonight at the Hudson Opera House in Hudson, NY at 6 pm.

Matthew Slaats is among the artists participating in the Marking Time exhibit opening tonight at 6pm at the Hudson Opera House in Hudson, NY. Marking Time presents the work of Hudson Valley artists who participated in the 2008 NYFA Mark Program. The participatine artists are: Dawn Breeze, Lisa Breznak, Laura Cannamela, Giovanni DiMola, Mimi Czajka Graminski, Tana Kellner, Greg Lock, Karl Saliter, M. Scott Schaffernoth, Carla Shapiro, Matthew Slaats, and Chad Weckle. Matthew will be doing a performance at tonight's opening. The exhibit will be on view through March 28.

Circus on Mars at John Davis Gallery in Hudson, closing Nov 2

I recently mentioned Martin Bromirski's claimed exhibit at the John Davis Gallery in Hudson. As I didn't see mention of the show on the gallery's website, I questioned the voracity veracity of the artist's claim, not that I questioned the artist's integrity, but I was simply living by the adage doveryai, no proveryai. Well, he's come through and presented documentation. So Martin's exhibit Circus on Mars is on the third floor of a carriage house space behind the gallery, as I understand it. From his images, the space's antiquated patina, complete with suspicious skid marks on some walls lends a new level of creepiness of clown allusions. I'm going to try to make a visit on Sunday which will be the final day of the exhibit.

Plugged In opening May 17 6-10 pm Hudson, NY.

If you happen to not be in Beacon on the evening of May 17 but up Hudson way instead, be sure to check out the exhibit Plugged In. The two week long exhibit will encompass a length of Warren St. seeded with New Media installations. Around 15 artists hailing from the region, some comprising collaborative teams, who incorporate new technologies into their artistic practice will be creating site specific and interactive pieces. Here's a brief write up from this month's Chronogram.
I've traded a few emails with the exhibit curator, Melissa Stafford, but I've only just now become aware of the extent of the exhibit as a site specific exhibit inhabiting the various environs, inside and out, of a stretch of Warren St.
The opening reception will be held at the PARC Foundation at 330 and 336 Warren St. and will include a number of performances in both spaces.
I won't be able to make it to the opening, and it's doubtful that I'll be able to catch the exhibit before it ends on May 31, but I'll try.
If anyone makes it to the opening or does see the exhibit, I'd be very interested in hearing about it.

Our eye on the Beacon laundry scene reports that she is privy to at least two recent incidents, of laundry pilfering at one of our Beacon Main St. laundromats.

You've got eight minutes left in your dry cycle, do you know where your britches are?

The irony of Kathy's laundry lament only struck me later, when I linked it with her participation in the dress themed exhibit opening on Sat, May 10 (reception from 6-8pm) at the Hudson Opera House in Hudson, NY. Dress will be on exhibit through June 7.
