Spirit of Beacon Day 2008 pictures: Beacon Artists At Large and Beacon's youth sample the future.

Talk about a super soaker. The Spirit of Beacon Parade went off as planned with uncertain weather looming last Sunday.
Here are some images from the Beacon Artists At Large parade entry. As part of a spontaneous collaboration with the Beacon Community Center, some students on one of the Center's afterschool programs drew depictions of what they want to be when they grow up. These drawings were then adapted into a large parade friendly format.

Nearly a month ago, I packed Ms Angelika off to embark on her low residency MFAdventure.
In light of her time away subjecting her mind to the grad school sausage ginder, I want to mention an interesting interview with Robert Storr on The Yale Arts and Architecture Podcast. (I've linked to the website that will direct you to the family of Yale podcasts on iTunes. You will need to download the iTunes software if you don't have it on your computer. Once you've done that, simply find the Arts & Arch. podcast.) In the segment titled "My life as and Artist", Storr, in his position as Dean of the Yale School of Art, speaks on the responsibility of the MFA program in preparing its students for the future, the role of artists in society, and the challenges that face those artists dedicating to making their way in this vocation.
She's back now, adjusting to life in kamp maykr.

In what may prove to be one of the more suggestively written articles ever run in the NYTimes, Kathryn Shattuck covers the searing stage antics of the Corning Museum's Glasslab. As I understand it, the Glasslab pairs the Museum's glassmasters in a real time collaboration, transferring concepts into glass on stage. One of Beacon's resident glassmasters, Dan Spitzer is among the glassmakers on the project that runs through June 3 in the garden of the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum.

I'll tastefully forego enumerating the moments of erotic innuendo I found in the story, and leave you, dear reader, to your own discovery. Consider it a contest. I'll just say if all references to glass were omitted from the article, it could easily become a review for some super bawdy Chippendale's-like dance routine, which might bode well for the four sweat beaded men on stage in case this glass thing doesn't pan out.
