Electronic Music: Powered by Girls Workshop at Ann Street Gallery in Newburgh, March 13

On March 13 the Ann St Gallery in Newburgh NY will be hosting a free workshop on creating electronic music for girls aged 13-18.  Suzanne Thorpe and Bonnie Jones, both electronic music artists will conduct the afternoon long workshop called Electronic Music: Powered by Girls (1-5pm) which will be followed by a public concert performed by Thorpe and Jones at 8pm.

Deborah Davidowits is among four artists featured in Upstate, a group show of accomplished artists living in the area opening tonight (April 18) and running through May 23 at Nicole Fiacco Gallery in Hudson. The other artists participating in the show are Susan Wides, Robert The and Joyce Robins. The opening reception is happening tonight from 6-8pm. Nicole Fiacco Gallery is located at 336 Warren St.

Karlos Carcamo is currently taking part in two exhibitions in New York. The first which opened on April 7 and will remain on view through April 25 is The Pleasure Seekers, curated by Dan Halm. The Pleasure Seekers can be seen at the chashama Times Square Gallery at 112 W 44th St. The second exhibit, \'flo\: art, text, new media at The Center of Book Arts is curated by Rocio Aranda-Alvarado. The exhibit which includes work by artists "all of whom engage in the concept of 'flow' - how text and image move and interfuse", opened on April 15 and will remain on view through June 27. An artist talk will be held on May 27 at 6:30 pm with Dahlia Elsayed, Jessica Lagunas, Cifford Owens and Robin Price. The Book Arts Center is located at 28 W 27 St, 3rd floor.

The Anne Street Gallery is hosting an artist lecture today at 2pm given by Bill Justin, a self taught folk artist and found object sculptor, as part of the gallery's current Art Brut exhibit on view through today. The Anne Street Gallery is located at 104 Anne Street in Newburgh.

Steven Evans, Dia Assistant Director for Beacon has curated an exhibit opening tomorrow at the Dorsky Gallery Curatorial Programs in Long Island City. Other Voices, Other Rooms brings together work by Max Cole, Marcia Hafif, Winston Roeth, David Simpson and Fred Sandback. An opening reception will be held on April 19 from 2 - 5pm. The exhibit will remain on view through June 28. Exhibition information is enclosed in this brochure. Dorsky Gallery Curatorial Programs is located at 11-03 45 Ave, Long Island City.

Today at 2pm, the Garrison Art Center is hosting an opening reception for its annual exhibit Site (School Invitational Themed Exhibit). The exhibit features work created by students throughout the area who range in age from kindergarten to high school in the area and includes work from Beacon High School and the Beacon Community Center's After School Program. The exhibit will remain on view through April 26.

In Yonkers this weekend, the YOHO Artist Studios complex is holding its annual open house. The open studios will be happening today and tomorrow from 12-5pm.

Finally, a project proposal by Jill Reynolds and Dan Spitzer is one of four that have reached the final stage of consideration for commissioning as a permenant public art piece in the lobby of a business tower in Pittsburgh PA. The chosen project will be announced on April 24. Schematics of the four contending proposals accompanies this article about the competition.

• Beacon Art Supply will be hosting a closing party on Wednesday, Feb 11 from 6-8pm. Details are at beaconite.ning.com. A silent auction will be held for a selection of items, and there are deals a plenty on the remaining inventory, as the party will mark the beginning of 60% markdowns on art supplies an remaining items from Burlock.
• Erica Hauser is opening up shop again at 469 Main. From Feb 9-14, you can stop into the Valentine Cupcake shop for handmade goodies, edible and not- for that special cupcake in your life. The approximate hours for the shop are: Feb 9-13, 2-6 pm. Feb 14, 1-8 pm.
• Daniel Weise of Open Space has been named one of the Greater Souther Dutchess Chamber of Commerce's Top Under 40 for 2009 as part of the organization's 4th Annual Shaker Awards. We're not talking about this kind of Shaker. The Shaker awards recognize folks under the age of 40 who are committed to shaping the region in a positive manner. A reception for which will be held on March 9th.
  
• Be sure to stop into Van Brunt Gallery to chew a bit of gum. Steve Rossi is casting other people's ABC gum as part of the endeavors taking place at the HFA Goes Inside at the Gallery.
  
• Harry Shearer's Silent Echo Chamber on view through today at the Aldrich Art Museum in Ridgefield CT was included as a feature on CNN last week. The piece was also featured on a segment on NPR's Talk of the Nation program in January.
• Via the Artful Manager, a compilation of content on the renewed debate of Federal funding of arts an culture vis a vis the economic stimulus plan.
• Because I'm lazy and I usually have more than enough on my plate already, I can't always hunt down new information, and things fall away from my attention. The Ann Street Gallery in Newburgh represents such an instance. The website for the gallery points to a static business card type placeholder with location and phone number, and emails from the gallery have either stopped coming to me, or they've been swallowed by my spam filter. But I've found a better portal through which to get news of the gallery which is the gallery's parent organization, safe-harbors.org Currently, the gallery is showing Art Brut, an exhibit of work by Bob Justin, Bill Marlieb, Dickie Peterson, Matt Sesow, Susan Ward and William Yost.
• In a similar vein, for anyone who's been frustrated in learning too late about upcoming art related lectures and events at Vassar, the college has a new online calendar that should prove more effective (definitely not perfect, but it's an improvement).
• Last week when I posted info on the Newburgh Art Supply, I neglected to include information on the store's custom picture framing services provided by Eric Jarmann. • Finally, it's becoming exceedingly evident that Facebook is reaching a critical mass here in our fair community, potentially causing ideological rifts between those who FB and those who FB not. Evidence of the sweeping phenomena could be found in a conversation had this weekend between five unnamed artists regarding the true implications of getting poked and the most effective way to evade the attention of a possible grade school stalker emerging from the fog of one's past.

Catching up and things i missed

Albert Shahinian Fine Art in Poughkeepsie is exhibiting work by photographer Billy Name and painter Margaret Crensen. This show also opened on Saturday. Kathleen interviewed Name for her write up in last weekend's Enjoy section. The gallery is located at 196 Main St. in Poughkeepsie.

Finally, back in Beacon at Zahra Studio, Jennifer Ruell-Huckle is exhibiting what sounds like a multitude of items in various media for her show, "The Cult of True Womanhood , Reliquaries, Rituals, and Remedies." The exhibit will be on view through January 30.

Almost finally, I'm in Denver still for another two weeks. A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that Michael Zansky, from the Hudson's other shore, is currently exhibiting at the Sandy Carson Gallery in Denver. Here is a write up on Zansky's show by Michael Paglia in Westword.

Absolutely finally, another recent NY in Denver item; Michele Mosko, who I met via our mutual activities at HVCCA in Peekskill, is a fellow Denver native. She just recently moved back out here, opening her gallery, Michele Mosko Fine Art, around the corner from my old pad. This weekend's Denver Post featured a write up of Michele's space by Kyle MacMillan.

Gallery Talk @ Ann St Gallery Oct 21 2pm

On Sunday, Oct 21at 2pm, the Ann Street Gallery in Newburgh will be hosting a gallery talk in conjunction with the current group exhibit, Chi.

Argentinean artist Eugene Cuttica will be giving a talk entitled "Art as Chi."

Chi refers to the natural energy of the Universe, which according to Mr. Cuttica “permeates everything, all matter from the smallest atoms and molecules to the largest planets and stars. It is the vital force of life”. Mr. Cuttica will talk about how to connect to the “CHI” energy inherent in all things, and how “CHI” has been an inspirational force in the creating of his own artworks.

The Ann Street Gallery group exhibition entitled “CHI” features the work of nine Latin American artists and runs to October 27th.

CHI: 9 Latin American Artists at Ann Street Gallery

Alejandro Dron is curating the Ann Street Gallery's second exhibit, CHI: 9 Latin American Artists.

The exhibit open on Saturday, Sept. 15 and runs through Oct. 27. There will be a reception from 6-9pm on Saturday.

There will also be a gallery talk held on October 21 at 2pm given by Eugene Cuttica called "The Art of Chi."

Last week's Second Saturday line up of happenings were blessed with great weather which resulted in what felt like one of the more bustling, well attended installments of the monthly event.

I wasn't able to make it around to many places during the day, but here are a few images of things I did see - primarily a few spaces at the Beacon Studios, and the opening at the Ann Street Gallery in Newburgh. Super Happy Colossal Second Saturday Fun Time

There is much much going on tomorrow for Second Saturday.

As I mentioned in a previous post, Flying Swine will be giving a reading of "Inventing Van Gogh" 7:30pm at 458 Main St.

Artists throughout the city will be opening their studios for visitors as part of the Open Studio event organized by the Beacon Art Salon . The Open Studio will run from 1-5pm.

The largest concentration of open studios is at the newly renamed Beacon Studios at 211 Fishkill Ave. This weekend's edition of POJO's Enjoy section covers the open studios.

As for galleries, bau's new exhibit is bau 30: Fresh Ink, a printmaking event. A group show of various printmakers. The reception is 6-9pm, bau is located at 161 Main St.

Bannerman Island Gallery at 150 Main St. is hosting a reception from 4-6pm for "CANACADEA" Landscapes in Resin by Carla Goldberg.

RiverWinds at 172 Main St is opening an retrospective exhibit of plein air painter Peter Billman. Reception is from 5-8pm.

Freshman Fine Art at 4 S Chestnut new exhibit is Denise MastrosimoneSmith: "Plantscapes - Transforming Images - Large Scale Color Drawings." Reception from 4-7pm.

Van Brunt Gallery will be opening a group show called No East No West featuring Lori Field, Reiko Fujinami, Elisa Pritzker, Hu Ren Yi, Kathleen Sweeney, Carl Van Brunt and Catherine Welshman. Reception from 6-9.

There is an art auction and reception happening at the Tallix facility located at 310 Fishkill Ave at 5pm. I had to go to Peekskill to learn about this event, and all I know is that it is going on. The event is sponsored by Hudson River HealthCare, The Preservation Company and Entergy. I can't tell what organization the auction is benefiting, but if you'd like event and ticket info, click here.

I'm sure there's other stuff going on, and of course, other galleries will be open late.....of course stop by Go North, I'll be there earlier in the day, and I'm sure a bit at night.

If you happen to be in Peekskill on June 9 or 10, that city's annual open studio event will be happening.
Also in Peekskill on Sat., HVCCA will be hosting an opening reception for Size Matters XS, and exhibit of small painting.
