Richard Bruce receives Hudson River Art Award

Richard Bruce is among the recipients a Hudson River Art Award from The Society of the Arts, Religion, and Contemporary Culture.

An excerpt from the press release:

Richard Bruce, Paintings

A native of West Virginia, Bruce grew up at the base of the Appalachian mountains and on the shores of the Ohio River. After a brief period in North Carolina, he moved to New York City, where he lived for 10 years, knowing that some day he would return to a rural area. He found everything he was looking for in the Hudson Valley. He now lives in the village of Cold Spring and maintains a studio in the city of Beacon, where many artists have migrated in recent years.

Bruce writes: "My paintings have been heavily influenced by the Abstract Expressionist painters and, during my years in NY, I had the great fortune to work with and get to know many of the greats, including Joan Mitchell, Milton Resnick and Louise Fishman. Abstract elements are still incorporated in my work, however, now my paintings are much more informed by the area in which I live and the ethereal beauty of the Hudson Valley. In my paintings I am not trying to create literal depictions of specific places, but am more interested in capturing the experience of the landscape, of being in nature and the inherent spirituality found there. The paintings are very much about the river and water. When I am not painting I spend a great deal of time kayaking on the river or hiking on the many trails in the area. I am also very concerned about the preservation and restoration of this environment and wonderful resource."

Zahra's Studio on Brink.com

Brink.com's Eye Candy section has a gallery of images taken by Angelika Rinnhofer of Zahra's Studio and the work of Tanya Kukucka, who's sculpture was the subject of an exhibit at Zahra's Studio early this year. A creepy but fascinating and oddly beautiful show.

This week at Dia:Beacon

There's a full schedule of events at Dia this week:

Thursday, April 27 12-1pm - Reading Group
. Dia has announced a lunch time series exploring the writings of some artists from Dia:Beacon's permanent collection. Spanning over the course of five Thursdays, (May 4, May 11, May 25, and June 1 are the other dates.) The details:

What: A reading group aimed at introducing participants to the writings of several featured artists in Dia:Beacon’s permanent collection.

How: Each session will focus on the work of 2 artists. Participants will have access to the galleries before noon, and are expected to have read the (short) texts beforehand. We will discuss the artists individually, seeing how the texts relate to the art work (or not) and how the 2 artists "talk" to each other. Some are easy fits, others are fitful:

· Sol LeWitt and Agnes Martin
· Robert Ryman and Josef Beuys
· Richard Serra and Robert Smithson
· Andy Warhol and Louise Bourgeois
· Donald Judd and Lawrence Weiner

Who: Karen Michel, Visiting Assistant Professor of Media Arts, Marist College and Cultural Correspondent, National Public Radio, will lead the sessions.

When: Five Thursdays: April 27, May 4, May 11 (skip May 18), May 25, and June 1. From 12 to 1 pm

Hungry readers are welcome so you may bring your lunch!

Where: Dia:Beacon Learning Lab

This is an education program free with admission to the museum. Reservations are strongly recommended. Please email José Blondet at jblondet@diabeacon.org or call (845) 440-01 00 ext. 13.

All the texts that will be discussed are published in Theories and Documents of Contemporary Art (Edited by Kristine Stiles and Peter Selz), a vast anthology of artists writings. Dia’s bookshop is offering a significant discount on this book to reading club’s participants. Few copies will be available at the Learning Lab.

Joan Mellon at ParaSite

"Adina" by Joan Mellon

ParaSite @ The Iron Fish Trading Company Presents:

JOAN MELLON
"Contemplating Color"
April 27th -May 28, 2006

**Reception: Second Saturday May 13th, 5 - 8pm

Please join me for the opening of "Contemplating Color" paintings by New York City based artist Joan Mellon. The work to be shown, recent multi-paneled and shaped minimalist paintings on canvas and paper, continue Joan Mellon's exploration into how to make paintings that she characterizes as, "not about anything other than themselves which, in keeping with my interests, means objects of color."

Describing her focus on color as an object, Joan Mellon has said, "Making paintings of simple shapes and subtle/intense color is a way for me to slow down the fast-paced, environment in which we live. It has always been my hope that the work I create serves as a pause in time, a place of contemplation where one human being can connect with another, and an antidote to an increasingly speedy, politicized, and disposable world."

Joan Mellon's work is in the collections of Johnson & Johnson, The Franklin Furnace Archives at the Museum of Modern Art, the School of Visual Arts, and the New York Public Library. It is also in private collections and has been exhibited in galleries, universities, and alternative spaces in the United States.

Joan Mellon holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MA from SUNY Empire State College. She is an adjunct art teacher at the State University of New York and an Artist-In-Residence at Roosevelt Hospital and St. Vincents Comprehensive Cancer Center in New York City.

"Contemplating Color" will be on view at ParaSite Art Space located at The Iron Fish Trading Company 167 Main Street, Beacon, NY, April 27th through May 28th, 2006. For further information please contact gallery director Karlos Carcamo at 347-531-6111.

Denver Dispatch

I just returned returned from a trip to Denver the other day. In addition to other projects out there, I am working on an exchange exhibit between artists based in Beacon, and artists of EDGE gallery, a coop gallery in Denver. The exhibits will be held concurrantly at the end of June, at Spire Studios in Beacon, and EDGE in Denver. Stay tuned for more details.
I'm in the process of creating posts about a few art related items in Denver on my personal blog. I'll have a couple more yet to post this weekend on public sculpture, and collector toys.

While I'm talking about my own stuff, there will be a reception held a OII restaurant in connection to my paintings being on display on Thurs., April 6 from 6:30-8pm. If you're around come by and have a drink, and enjoy some tapas.
