This past Thursday, Angelika Rinnhofer hosted ribbon cutting at her studio at Spire Studios. Members of the Poughkeepsie Chamber of Commerce, and local artists were in attendance.

Please join me for the opening of "Contemplating Color" paintings by New York City based artist Joan Mellon. The work to be shown, recent multi-paneled and shaped minimalist paintings on canvas and paper, continue Joan Mellon's exploration into how to make paintings that she characterizes as, "not about anything other than themselves which, in keeping with my interests, means objects of color."

Describing her focus on color as an object, Joan Mellon has said, "Making paintings of simple shapes and subtle/intense color is a way for me to slow down the fast-paced, environment in which we live. It has always been my hope that the work I create serves as a pause in time, a place of contemplation where one human being can connect with another, and an antidote to an increasingly speedy, politicized, and disposable world."

Joan Mellon's work is in the collections of Johnson & Johnson, The Franklin Furnace Archives at the Museum of Modern Art, the School of Visual Arts, and the New York Public Library. It is also in private collections and has been exhibited in galleries, universities, and alternative spaces in the United States.

Joan Mellon holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MA from SUNY Empire State College. She is an adjunct art teacher at the State University of New York and an Artist-In-Residence at Roosevelt Hospital and St. Vincents Comprehensive Cancer Center in New York City.

Unexpected Visitors at Maxwell Fine Arts, Peekskill

A new exhibit will be opening this weekend at Maxwell Fine Arts in Peekskill that includes work by a load of artists from up and down the Hudson Valley and beyond. Beacon area artists in the show are: Chris Albert, Simon Draper, Dakin Roy, and Coulter Young.

The opening reception will be held Saturday, April 22 from 3-6 pm.

April 13, 7pm Video Artists in Dialogue at HVCCA in Peekskill

HVCCA is presenting another installment of its monthly Video Artists in Dialogue series featuring the center's current artist in residence, Itziar Barrio of Bilbao Spain. Itziar's talk will be followed by a video reel of work curated by Daniel Fuller.

Itziar Bario was born in and lives in the Basque area of Spain, an area rich in history and with a growing, and exciting young contemporary art community encouraged by the opening of the Guggenheim, Bilbao. Itziar graduated from the University of Bilbao in 1998, with a degree in psychology, then immersed herself in art and dance classes in Barcelona, Bilbao, San Sebastian and London. Since 2002, she has worked as a professor of painting and creative _expression in Bilbao. Due to her background, her versatility in the arts encompasses drawing, painting, performance and video.

Denver Dispatch

I just returned returned from a trip to Denver the other day. In addition to other projects out there, I am working on an exchange exhibit between artists based in Beacon, and artists of EDGE gallery, a coop gallery in Denver. The exhibits will be held concurrantly at the end of June, at Spire Studios in Beacon, and EDGE in Denver. Stay tuned for more details.
I'm in the process of creating posts about a few art related items in Denver on my personal blog. I'll have a couple more yet to post this weekend on public sculpture, and collector toys.

While I'm talking about my own stuff, there will be a reception held a OII restaurant in connection to my paintings being on display on Thurs., April 6 from 6:30-8pm. If you're around come by and have a drink, and enjoy some tapas.

Robert C. Morgan to Lecture on art and the Market at Yellow Bird Gallery

Robert C. Morgan is an art critic, a poet and an artist. He has a master’s degree in Fine Arts and a PhD in art history. As an art critic he has published hundreds of articles and reviews in magazines and journals. Mr. Morgan is coming to Yellow Bird to discuss how art is marketed and how that marketing affects the way we view art, the way we talk about art, and the way we understand art. His discussion will cover the role of the market and the media in contemporary art and how they affect the future of art. Mr. Morgan will also discuss the meaning of all this for new and more modest collectors who want to start and build their own collections based on there own sensibilities. An open question period and discussion will follow Mr. Morgan’s talk.

Zahra's Studio profiled in POJO

Kathleen Murray spoke with Keith Zahra, about his tattoo/piercing studio and art gallery, Zahra's Studio. The article appeared in Sunday March 26's Poughkeepsie Journal.

I missed his last exhibit of work by Steven Cerio, but the exhibit prior to that, Teratogeny, by Tanya Kukucka was both unsettling and beautiful. The upcoming exhibit, "Paint Noir", with work by Michael D'Antuono opens this coming weekend, with the reception being held on April 8th.

Zahra's place adds an essential dimension to what's going on creatively in Beacon. His exhibits are often raw and surprising, and the atmosphere is strickly stick-up-the-ass-free.

Summer art camp in Beacon NY

LionSun Creative Arts Camp will be offering art classes and activities for children at the University Settlement in Beacon.

Some details about the LionSun Creative Arts Summer Camp:

The camp will be four weeks-- July 3-July 28 from 9AM-5PM with early drop
off at 8AM and late pick up at 6PM for 5-12 year olds. The fee for the
camp is $200/wk with $15 each for the early/late options/wk. The fee
includes all materials and equipment, swimming, and special guest performances
during the camp day. Campers will bring a bag lunch from home.General
schedule includes art activities in the morning. Fun outdoor activities in
the afternoons including field games and teambuilding on the ropes course.
Special Fridays with community festivals, art explosions, hikes, and more!There
will be Mommy and Me sessions for 1-4 year olds twice/week with one hour of
creative activities and an hour in the pool. (Groups will come by age).There
will be special events like family (and friends of course) concerts, festivals,
silly days and other events that bring our vibrant community together.More info
will be out soon including the brochure, ads and other publicity materials that
will detail the day’s schedule, the artists, and the activities offered.
